Moen 87786 Kitchen Faucet, seized and now Broken cartridge retainer ring/nut removal?

Moen 87786 faucet, 1224 cartridge, the fiber retainer ring was seized, soaked with calcium remover then with penetrant and then, using retainer removal tool, ears broke off cartridge retainer nut/ring.

Moen makes several faucets that use the 1224 cartridge and different means of securing the cartridge. Some use a clip, others use a brass collar nut, but the one for my faucet is an internal fiber/plastic retainer nut. This type definitely has a threaded cartridge retainer ring. Moen makes a removal tool that looks like a metal tube with a notched engage the retainer nut (Moen P/N: 179120). Once the ears on the retainer ring are broken, other means become nevessary to extract it. Moen calls it an "embedded cartridge nut". Some have recommended heat sometimes to the point of melting the retainer. Others have removed it by drilling the plastic nut in several places and pulling out the broken pieces.

Cannot pull out the cartridge. it appears to be moen part number 1224.

The Moen #1224 cartridge does NOT always come out easily! Sometimes the retaining nut (Moen part #14986) is jammed from factory installation and can even break on removal. Try soaking its threads with some Singer sewing machine oil overnight and then pouring a little boiling water on the nut to expand it at the same time as you start to turn it counter-clockwise with pliers.
Next you may find the cartridge almost impossible to pull out! You do not need a special tool. Just purchase a stainless #8 x 32 machine bolt and screw it well down into the threaded hole on the top of the cartridge. Then use a piece of wood like a scrap of 2 x 4 as a pivot point and put the vee of a pry bar under the head of the screw. Make sure you are levering upwards exactly vertical and you should be able to pop the cartridge out. Clean the hole and grease it with a little Vaseline before pushing in the new cartridge. See photos.

You can just replace the o-rings. You have to remove the large nut at the base of the spout. I posted a blog post -and a video about me replacing mine.

if it is dripping from the spout then there is a cartridge that needs replaced...1225 for the single handle type and 1224 for the 2 handle type. Moen does not use O-rings in their valves. If it leaking around the base of the spout there is an oring kit that you will need and you will have to pull the spout off to access them. Most Moen faucets use a 117 kit for the spout but there are some different ones.
