Sounds like a transmition problem. does the noise happen when it goes into spin on the other settings? If no noise in the spin cycle on the other setting, then it sounds like a the gears in the transmition internally when bad for the agitation.

I have kenmore 80 series heavy duty/ super capacity plus washer that after it fills with water, hot or cold and it starts the wash cycle, I noticed that the agitator only moves once in awhile and stops

hum either a bad timer sticking the point contacts close. have u tried this in all cycles? and possibly a motor with bad windings not enough power to run agitation? try running in mild or gentle and see what happens? I was tempted to say the cam dogs in agitator but they dont work then stop then work, when they go out they go out.

70 Series Kenmore Washer Agitates in Heavy Duty regardless of switch selection

Yours is a 2 speed motor. Does it spin in 2 different speeds. If so, then it most likely is designed with only to agitate in 1 speed. If it only spins in one speed, then your motor is defective

Kenmore 90 Series Heavy Duty Washer - Agitator doesnt spin

Washer does not work at regular speed, it works on other setting

Since the machine works in two of the three speeds the problem points to either the timer or the switch that sets the speed.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Go to the control panel category and see their diagram and list of switches and parts.

These aren't that difficult to replace but they aren't inexpensive.

Wash cycle won't start after the tub fills up with water.

There's no delicate or regular spin or agitation If your washer doesn't spin or agitate on either the delicate or regular cycle, check these:

Selector switch
Clutch assembly
Drive motor
Selector switch If your washer has a selector switch on the control panel, make sure the button for your selection is pressed all the way in, or set properly.

Clutch assembly Many GE®/Hotpoint® washers use a clutch and an automatic shift lever. This assembly is quite complicated. If there's a problem with it, you probably should contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Drive motor Many washing machines have multiple-speed drive motors. Though it's uncommon, the drive motor may work fine on one speed but not on another. If the drive motor has failed on one speed, you need to replace the entire motor.

Washer problem

THE SPEED SELECTOR SWITCH MAY BE SHORTED CAUSING THE MOTOR TO TRY AND RUN ON BOTH THE LOW AND HIGH SPEED WINDINGS. THIS WILL PULL TOO MUCH CURRENT AND TRIP THE BREAKER.
THE MOTOR WINDINGS FOR THE HIGH SPEED COULD BE SHORTED CAUSING EXCESSIVE CURRENT DRAW.
