Unplugged immediately to prevent damage to new motor. Could this be a clutch or transmission problem?
You have what they call a direct drive washer. If you look at it from underneath you will see the motor then the transmission and then the water pump. I have seen socks get sucked into those pumps and lock everything up. Two clips hold the water pump onto the transmission. Pop the two clips off and slide the pump off of the transmission and tuck it out of the way somewhere. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE HOSES! If you do and the tub is full of water then you will soak yourself and the floor in water. Now with the pump tied out of the way plug in the washer and turn it on, let it fill up if it is empty. If the washer tub starts agitating after it is filled then it means that there is something in the pump. When I have those pumps fail they still work but just leak, they never locked up on me unless it was a sock or something. Drain the water if you determine it is the pump, remove the pump and see if there is a sock in it and if you can fish it out. If not buy a new pump. They are $30-40. They usually clog from overfilling the washer and the clothing slips between the inner and outer tub.
If removing the pump doesn't allow the washer to work then the transmission is suspect or the tub itself.

Testimonial: "No sock in the pump."
Did you try to run the washer with the pump removed and tied out of the way to see if the basket will spin?
No. I took the transmission out and there is a glaze of oil on it. It spins most of the way by hand but then locks up. Im going to order a refurbished trans. and clutch kit. Wondering if the basket drive is bad too or anything else that could contribute to trans failure.
The most I can remember on that is try to turn the basket by and and make sure it doesn't bounce around and spins with ease without locking up.

it could be several things, something is lodged in pump, so the motor wont run, the motor is bad, or you have a bad transmission.
Start with the pump and see if it has sock or something stuck in it.

IF THE MOTOR DOES NOT RUN CHECK THE LID SWITCH. IF YOU HEAR IT RUNNING YOU MAY HAVE A BAD COUPLER.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.20702990&pathTaken=partSearch
and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.
Older models only used the switch during the drain / spin cycle.
Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.
This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

It also has a troubleshooting guide.
To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.
Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.
If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.
