SOURCE: Reliance gas water heater 40 capicity, has a leak on the top

Most likely only one of the pipes is leaking but weaping enough to cover the top and indented places near both inlet and outlet. This leak has most likely penetrated all the insulation and is a problem throughout the tank wrap insulation...If you are able to blow air continuously long enough to determine which connection is leaking then fix it. It will likely to take quite a while to dry out all the insulation if the water has migrated down into the tank wrap... If you determine that the insulation is waterlogged, you may be able to drill several small holes in the external cover.

SOURCE: Dip Tube

You may want to check the heating elements first. Where I live there is a lot of lime in the water that can coat the elements.

SOURCE: Our electric water heater doesn't work.

make sure it is wired correctly, check circuit breaker, check breaker built on to element. If all fails, and it is determined your not getting power to it, you may need a electrician. Be careful. good luck.

Reliance is an AO Smith company

I cannot find your model number
The serial number seems to show it was made in 1994, so the spec sheet would be difficult to find
You must have bought a good heater and taken care of it for it to last that long.

Typical 40 gallon Reliance electric:
18" x 59-1/2"
20-1/2" x 44"

Self-cleaning type Reliance 40 gallon
19" x 60"
21-1/2" x 46"

The size of your heater can be determined by measuring the height, and then measure across the top to get the diameter. Your measurements will be close to the numbers shown above.

Dip tube size and length and type of end for Rheem PVW50 water heater

All dip tubes on water heaters smaller than 75 gallons are 3/4" male pipe thread to screw into the heater. As for length, go to a plbg supply and ask for a dip tube for a 50 gallon heater, and if it is too long, cut it. I believe that Home Depot also has them right out on the floor for sale.

Does an Intertherm water heater model HSE 30F 240S have a dip tube? Cold water comes n on the side of the tank not on top or bottom.

How to Repair or Replace Defective Water Heater Dip Tubes

www.familyhandyman.com > Skills > Plumbing
The role of the dip tube is to direct incoming cold replacement water to the bottom of the tank for heating. While it warms, the dense, cold water stays naturally segregated from the warmer, lighter water floating on top. The water for faucets and appliances comes from the hot layer on top.

My anode rod, and dip tube and t& P tube relief gasket is leaking

Copy following link for general troubleshoot:
Then add a comment and let's get the problem solved.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

FYI:
Anode rod is either connected to hot-water nipple, or installed in separate port located top of tank. Anode stops water heater tank from rusting.
Dip tube is a plastic tube that is connected to cold water nipple and extends to bottom of tank so cold water always enters tank bottom.
TP valve is brass safety valve that is screwed into a port located on top of tank, or located on side of tank, and will release water when pressure or temperature exceed rating of TP.

I am trying to replace the dip tube in my RheemPowerVent water heater but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the old one out. The treaded metal cold water nipple is screwed into a circular...

1) Rheem power vent series:
http://www.rheem.com/product.aspx?id=C24E3F52-A6A4-4BC7-AF5B-0DF23A7A0263

2) Looking at product over-view manual: It says 'inlet connects directly to a dip tube which directs water to bottom of the tank.'
So it appears that dip tub is connected to heat trap nipple on cold water side

3) Sample manual for Rheem shows exploded parts list
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=a92c7d0e-8a95-48ba-8810-cd714f33d47a
The exploded view shows cold water nipple separate from dip tube, and shows dip tube gasket, and makes it unclear

4) Manual shows Rheem phone number:

Not enough hot water to complete shower. Noticed

If it is a new water heater it might be that the water supplies are crossed. The cold water should be installed on the right hand side of the tank or on the bottom if your tank hooks up on the side. If its an older water heater the dip tube may have broken off. This is a tube that runs from the top of your water heater on the cold side to the lower portion of the tank.It puts the cold water in the bottom of the heater which pushes the hot water to the top.To change the dip tube out you must disconnect the cold water supply from the 3/4 inch nipple at the top of the tank. Then with a pipe wrench unscrew the nipple from the tank it will have the remainder of the tube on it.You can get a replacement dip tube at a plumming supply. Installation is opposite of removal. If this is your problem I suggest you get a new water heater .Usually its caused from minnerals in the water or buy two dissimiler metals being connected together in the water piping system causing corrosion Your water heater will probably fail in the near future.

Water heater heats but not to same temperature

Try shutting off the gas, shut off the water, and drain the tank to remove any sediment that may interfere with heat transfer from the burner. If that doesn't do it, check the dip tube to make sure it is still intact. The dip tube directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank and the hot water is tapped from the top of the tank. If neither of those turn out to be the problem, check the thermo-couple. Since a gas water heater typically survives about 6-9 years, you may be better off just replacing it.
