I put in a blank or recorded disk ,and the screen message is " unknown disk", and ejects the disk. I have used different blank disks, with the same result. Seems it is not " reading" the disk. Probable causes? Thank you!

Try using a cleaning disc such as disc washer. It usually will fix problem and if not just replace dvd player.

Some drives are CD, some are CD and DVD. If you try to use a DVD in a CD recorder you will definitely get an "unknown disk" notice.

Are you sure the drive is a read-writer? some optical drives are read only. If its not a writer and you put a blank in, that is what it would do.

If you put a real and recorded disk in(not a copy) and it says unknown disk, the eye is dirty. Cleaning the drive will be the next step.

SOURCE: dvd player will not read disk

have you tried getting a lense cleaner as they sometimes get alot of dust and will stop signal from disk to the laser if this dont solve the prolbem then you are looking at replacing the laser unit itself if the cleaning dont work and you think you are capable of taking the casing off make sure you switch it off first this should send the laser to the center of the laser tray if you take the case off and it is not in the center it might just be that it has got jammed now sometimes gently pushing it back to the middle will get it working again if it is already in the middle then it could be that the laser needs replacing but if not in middle push gently dont gerk it it should be quite stiff to push any way when you push back to middle try a disk with the casing off but please make sure you dont touch anything whislt it is plugged in if nothing works then it probably is the laser but before you do anything as soon as you get the case off switch it on and put a dvd in and make sure the disk is spinning if not laser unit is nakered and need replacing let me know how you get on hope this is some help to you

SOURCE: Samsung DVD-4600 DVD/VCR Player

My Smasung DVD/VCR Combo stopped reading DVDs because of a dirty read head. It started by only playing disks sometimes, and progressed to never playing disks. I assumed it was a dirty laser lens so I bought a lens cleaner set. Unfortunately my player wouldn't play the cleaner disk.

So I took it apart and cleaned the laser lens manually with some isopropyl alcohol (the clenser that came with my cleaning disk), and a lens cloth (that came with my glasses). Just open the case (starting with the screws in the back) and remove the snap in cross panel that obscures the lens of the DVD portion. Put a drop of cleanser on the lens and gently wipe it with the cloth.

Oh and by the way, I take no responsibility if you break your own player while following my instructions. My own DVD player was far out of warranty at the time I cracked it open.

SOURCE: LG RH265 - Problem when trying to register blank disk/dubbing

The DVD needs to initialise the disk first. Come out of the HDD dubbing menu and press DVD on the remote. The blank recordable disk should be recognised and you should see Initialise disk? on the screen. Press Start and hey presto, you can now dub from the HDD Movie dubbing menu (as per the manual instructions).

When I insert a blank DVD+R to copy a VHS, It reads the disk, says "Unknown Disk" and ejects it. How do I record if I can't keep a disk in the machine?

some discs don't work in some recorders. I always use verbatim, ritek or tdk discs and have very few problems. if the recorder suddenly dislikes a batch of one brand, I'll use one of the others.

I've just answered this. please don't post the same question more than once, it doesn't help. I've just wasted time answering this instead of someone who needs help.

What speed of disk did you use? On my older machine if I use faster than 4X it will not accept the disk. Check out your disk an see if the record speed is to fast for the machine.

Unit does not recognize DVD-R and is ejected from the player

You may need to try a DVD+R disc. Some of the players/recorders are REALLY picky.

I had the same problem. It was fixed under warranty. It was some sort of alignment problem. It would not play SOME commercially produced DVD's either.

I have had the same problem a few times. All I do is eject and re-insert the disk until it recognises it, this seemed to work for me

Dvd do not record

The unit is saying that its an "Un-format disc" problem. Is this the only error code you are getting? Also, what types of DVDs are being used? As in, DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD-RW and what speeds? 1x 2x 4x 8x 16x?

GoVideo VR3845

I had the same problem "unknown disk, please check disk". Tried the reset method described in the owner's manual (power off, unplug and wait 5 seconds). This did not work.

I then put the unit into the setup mode (press set-up on the remote.) I selected "Factory Settings" under the general category and then chose "Set". These reset the unit and it seems to be working okay now. Hope this helps.
