When there is no phone jack you have to connect to your computer with USB cable. You will need fax software loaded on your computer and faxes can be sent via the internet.

Hooking up cables and phone line to use the Fax on the P3150

Find a telephone wall-jack.
Buy a 1-to-2 telephone-splitter -- one end plugs into the wall-jack, and the other end provides 2 telephone-jacks.

Connect your telephone to one of those 2 jacks.
Connect your All-In-One to the other of those 2 jacks.
Be sure to use a 4-wire telephone-cable, not an 8-wire network-cable.

CAN NOT GET FAXES? I DO HAVE DIAL TONE IT IS ON

Here are some things you can try, hopefully one will help.
  1. Check for a phone connection in the correct input jack. Some printers with fax capability have more than one phone jack so you can hook up an answering machine or another phone “downstream” from the printer. Consult your instruction manual to determine the right connection for your printer.
  2. Ensure that you are running on an analog line. IP phones can not run most Faxes, even if you get a dial tone. Also in a corperate setting ensure that you are not on a digital line.
  3. If an answering machine is connected to the same line, fax reception problems can occur. These problems may be corrected by changing settings or phone line connections. If you have other faxes on the same line as this one, ensure that the "Rings to Answer" setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. Same goes for your answering machines. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.

Don't know how to connect

Hi, I'd love to help you with the problem you described.

  1. Connect your phone line (out of the wall or your phone modem supplied by your phone or cable company) into the jack on your MFC-240 has a picture that is shaped like a little telephone. These jacks are located on the lower left back corner when you are facing your printer.
  2. In the same location, there is another jack right next to the one you just plugged into. Take the phone cord that came with your printer and plug one end into the jack.
  3. Plug the other end of this cord into the base of your phone or answering machine.
  4. Test your connections by picking up your phone handset and listening for a dial tone.
  5. Next, set the receive mode your printer for fax only (if you set the receive mode to phone/fax or other mode, you could experience problems with your voice mail). Fax only will ensure that your printer will only answer fax calls. Here's how you do it.
Here's how:
  • Press the menu key on your MFC-240
  • Press 0 (display switches to initial set up)
  • Press 1 (display switches to receive mode)
  • Fax only should be the first item that shows on the display.
  • Press the ok button on your MFC-240. The machine is now ready to receive faxes.
If you have not done so already set up either your answering machine or your cable company voice mail.

Fax doesn't recognize incoming phone call

Try this: using a cell phone, call your fax. Listen on the cell for a busy signal, fax tones, dial tone, etc. If the fax does not answer the cell, check the following: make sure the phone line is plugged into the LINE jack on the fax, NOT THE PHONE JACK. The phone jack is to connect a TELEPHONE to the fax. If problem still exists, press MENU on your MFC, and scroll to GENERAL SETUP, FAX. Scroll to SETUP RECEIVE, and, after writing down the settings, try changing the RING DELAY or RING TIME settings. If problem is still there, press CLEAR/BACK button until GENERAL SETUP appears on screen. Scroll down to INITIAL SETUP, and select RECEIVE MODE. Try changing RECEIVE MODE settings. Write them down before you change anything.

Will not send faxes

Make sure the phone line is plugged into the LINE jack on the fax, NOT THE PHONE JACK. The phone jack is to add a telephone to the fax. If it is connected properly, try calling your fax from a cell phone and see if it answers. If the fax answers, hang up and press the HOOK button on your fax and use the fax keypad to call your cell. If the cell rings, answer the call and listen for the fax machine tones. If you hear the fax on the cell, you may have to change your machines TRANSMIT or DIALING settings.
