SOURCE: Belt broken a a Kenmore

Greetings from GoVacuum.com,

To properly fix a belt on a Kenmore vacuum, you will first need to indicate whether this is an upright or a canister vacuum. The model given, 116, is only the first part of the model number, and all Kenmore vacuums, upright and canister style, start with 116. There is a period first, then a whole string of numbers, 116.255553 etc.

Kenmore vacuums are mainly made by Panasonic for Sears, and most will use a Panasonic belt. If the belt is an upright, this makes it simple, and will be a Panasonic "UB" belt.

For a canister vacuum, most models use what's referred to as a cogged belt. This type of belt has little teeth on the inside of the belt, and is Panasonic CB-5 belt.

Instructions on How to Replace the Belt for an Upright;
There will usually be to plastic screws on the top of the agitator housing on the base of the vacuum, that will say belt access. Simply take a flat head screw driver, and turn the screws so that the screw is pointing up and down on both sides. Then pull the plastic agitator housing, or the top of the base of the vacuum off. Inside you will see a the roller brush, and the belt (or broken belt). Simply take the new belt and wrap it around the silver pulley located in the back of the machine, opposite the roller brush, and wrap the other end of the belt through the roller brush. Stretch the roller brush back into the housing of the machine, and replace the top of the base of the vacuum back on the machine. You should give the belt a tug, to ensure that the brush is spinning when the belt is being pulled.

Feel free to email me if you have any further questions, I'd be happy to walk you through it, or even shoot an instructional video to show you how you to replace it. My email is chris.jones at govacuum . com.

SOURCE: Kenmore vacuum manuals

I tried what reddevil6 suggested and was not able to get Sears to produce a manual. I would prefer an online manual but at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything.

My wand release button is stuck on my Kenmore Progressive vacuum cleaner so it will not release the wands.

I just tried this trick from an Amazon review answer and it worked! I just turned the handle upset down, pressed the wand release button while the handle was in that position, and voila! The attachment came right out. Here's the Amazon quote I found via Google:

"Unplug the vacuum and remove the wand. If you cannot get your wand to release, try turning the handle over, and using gravity to allow the wand release switch to fall while you depress the wand release button and jiggle the wand in and out."

Wand attached to hose - how do you detach? Kenmore central vacuum system model s107 34730

Many central vacuums have similar or the same parts made by a small number of manufacturers. I found the MD Central Vacuum website to be very helpful and I hope it solves your problem. I have attached pictures and descriptions from their website so you can see if this is what your wand looks like. If so, to separate the wand from the floor brush unit there should be a lever or button on the brush housing you can push with your foot to release the wand. If you are asking about where the wand connects to the hose you push that black button that you see at the top of the wand in the picture, the top smaller black part. I hope this helps.

How do I disassemble a Canister Vac Model 116.21714. extension wand ?

Sadly, there does not seem to be much help available for this. Sears wants $100++ another $30-40 shipping to have UPS take it and may be fix it. If you do not want to pay the fees, you will still have to pay $50 to get it back. Sears service shops will not fix vacuums. What the heck?!

Losing power to stick/floor vacuum

if you have an extension wand, the replacement will cost about $100.00. there is a way to repair both the pwr-cord on the brush assemble and the wand, but it depends on how much damage there is. also you need to check the contacts where the wand connects with the handle, and the prongs on the handle.

let me know if you still need help
