If it's a heat pump, it means you either bumped the heat up to a temp that the heat pump cannot reach quickly OR it's so cold out that there is no heat for the heat exchanger to pull from the air outside.
Both conditions turn on the heat strips in the air handler. The heat strips are your 'auxiliary heat.'

Turn up your outside thermostat in the outside unit.
You should have about 3 degrees difference in one stage to the next. So I would change the thermosat with one that has three stages of heat.

There should be electric heat strips in the airhandler.
They automatically come on when the unit goes into defrost, the thermostat is turned up more than 7 degrees over the indoor temp or if the outdoor temp is just so cold the HP cannot keep up.
Tat is your auxillary or emergency heat.
What does the new t-stats installers booklet say that the 0170 function and #2 #7 options are for?
If it is for gas vs elec heat then set it on the elec option.
The difference is that in gas heat systems the blower comes on a few min AFTER the furnace fires up to allow the heat exchanger to get hot.
In an electric furnace the blower has to come on emediatly because the heat strips get hot emediatly and if the blower is delayed the system will shut of in high temp overload.

the pro 300 is a single stage thermostat and can not be wired to control 2 heat stages seperately

the power for that stat comes from the furnace - if you have no display on the stat you have a furnace problem

I had the same experience connecting to my Carrier Weatherbeater furnace and AC. My old thermo LUX?? died and I replaced it with RTHL3210 last November. The heat worked. This week I found the cool didn't work. After much screwing around, I found the Yellow to Black connection to the AC read only 17 ohms! The POOR Honeywell couldn't drive the load. It could handle the 500 ohm Heat connection.
I am ordering a LUX thermo; they actually SPEC 1.5A per connection or 2.0A total! I long fro the olden days when a mfr actuallly provided TECHNICAL information. Not just marketing hype to peddle something.
SHAME ON HONEYWELL FOR NOT REVEALING THEY HAVE A FEEBLE OUTPUT CAPABILITY.
