DVR 120 Disc/Screen freezes half way through

Sounds like the main board is not getting through it's boot sequence. Cannot be fixed except to replace the main board, which will cost more than a replacement unit.

Usually when a player keeps freezing on a single frame of a dvd, it means that the disc is scratched. When it "sticks", the dvd will usually stop moving (on the part of the disc with a scratch) and the remote will not work. First, look at the dvd and look to see if there is a visible smudge or scratch on the disc. Fingerprints are a common problem with dvds. I suggest you try to clean the dvd in case it is just dirty and if it still doesn't work, some companies make disc repair kits. You could probably find one at walmart or radio shack. Is it possible that the region codes of the DVD player and the DVD's are different?

The blu-ray laser in your PS3 is a three part laser (cd / dvd / blu-ray). They last only 1-3 years with average use. It's a Sony defect.

Upgraded the firmware on both drives. It shuntered a bit on the first go but it didn't freeze and the disc eventually read ok.

your laser is getting weaker now, if you have thoroughly cleaned then it needs a replacement now.

Get a cleaning disk and run it through the machine. Could be a dirty lens on the laser.

Try unplugging the unit from its power supply. Wait a few moments and then plug it back in. I have the same unit and that is what I have had to do. I am afraid that we have purchased junk. This machine "works" some of the time. It usually functions well as a player but fails on numerous occasions as a recorder.

have you tried using a laser disc cleaner after alot of use the laser eye can become dusty and make it hard to read
