Ensure you are following the install steps correctly, there are specific jacks for fax1/2. As to firmware, look in service mode/firmware/ and see if you have a version listed for the fax. If not I would suspect you have the cables in the wrong slots. Also ensure you have the fax set to the correct country code

try with trouble reset
turn off the machine, press and keep pressed utility counter, turn on the machine
on the display you'll see the Trouble reset button on the display, touch it and turn off and on the machine
check if error disappear

CD231 at power up.
Solution:
CAUSE: Complete fax kit was not installed.
SOLUTION: These three items make up the complete fax kit, FK502, MK706 and MK704. If not installed together, the C250/C252 will display code CD231.
