Sounds like a configuration error. if your heat strips are not coming on while in defrost either it's not wired properly or it simply does not know it has back up heat. read the manual closely and in the configuration make sure your tstat is set for the proper equipment... 1 heat/ 1 cool, 2 heat/ 2cool, 2stage heat pump w/ back up heat, etc..

SOURCE: thermostat says ''Aux heat on'' and buzzes when we turn on heat

You most likely have a heat pump, the aux heat (usually electric) comes on anytime the room temperature is 4 degrees below the thermostat setting. Does the buzz go off when the aux heat lite goes out? If the aux heat does not shut off then the primary heater (heat pump) is not putting out enough heat to satisfy the thermostat. I need a little more info. Do you have a heat pump? Is it working?

SOURCE: heat pump auxiliary heat does not turn on

Turn up your outside thermostat in the outside unit.
You should have about 3 degrees difference in one stage to the next. So I would change the thermosat with one that has three stages of heat.

SOURCE: Thermostat show AUX HEAT

A heatpump has two sources of heat. One is when the heatpump is operating in normal heat mode, and the other is typically electric heat strips.

The strips come on when the unit is going into defrost, when the unit is not able to keep up with the demand for heat (really cold temps) and when the unit is not working properly.

Whne the strips are on, the T-stat displays "aux-heat" to indicate the strips are in operation.

If the strips are working properly you should have warmer air than with the HP alone. Try switchin it from "heat" to "emergency heat" and see what it will do.

When the HP is not able to keep up with the demand for heat then the heat strips come on, but they typically come on only when the room temp has gotten well below the thermostat setting.

In that situation it would be normal to see indoor temps at 63 degrees when the T-stat is set on 70.

But when you set it to E-heat it bypasses the heatpump operation and goes directly to the heat strips. If they are working properly it should maintain an accurate temp in the home.

SOURCE: heat pump works in emergency heat, but not in auxiliary heat

I set the thermostat for 70 degrees. It comes on always in auxillary heat and does not shut off when it reaches 70 degrees. It is a heat pump, I am assuming, it might be the thermostat? But when the air conditioner is on, it turns off when it reaches it's temperature.

SOURCE: what does aux mean on a honeywell Thermostat?

The aux switch is for electric heat banks installed in the air handler. Depending on the outside temp. it may not be efficient to run in heat pump mode but in aux. or emergency would run the electric heat in the air handler.

I have a honeywell thermostat that does not have an emergency setting. what can i do?

I have yet to see a thermostat for a heat pump (guessing it's what you have) that doesn't have emergency heat. It's usually listed as AUX.
If you bump the heat up 10degrees you will probably see a light come on which indicates 'AUX/emergency' heat.
Be sure to turn it back down.
Listing the thermostat model might help someone give a more definite answer.

I have a Honeywell thermostat and does not have an emergency heat setting. What do i do?

There is no emergency setting on a thermostat but if you have a heat pump and electric heat then your electric heat will consider emergency heat or 2 stage heat.
On thermostat it will say aux

How can I connect an Intertherm furnace with a heat pump to a new Honeywell thermostat?

Ensure that that thermostat is for a heat pump and has connections for the emergency heat strips.

Buzzing sound when aux heat comes on

Sounds like it could be a effiency function to warn you that the heat elements are on. Check your thermostat manual and see if you can turn this feature off. If this is not a feature then the thermostat may be wired wrong or something in the circuit may be trying to short out.

New heat pump system freezing, questioning wiring.

W1 and E on stat need tied together. When W1 comes on wire where all heat elements come on. On the outside unit defrost board set the 45-60-90 to 45 and see if that takes care of the frost problem.

I only have two settings. Which is which and how so?

I think you probably have a heat pump. Aux heat is electrical resistance heat coils that produce heat when the heat pump can not produce enough to keep the temperature up (caused by low outside temperature or a problem with the refrigerant system). This resistance heat can be switched on by the emerg. heat button. It also can come on automaticlly (sp) and will be indicated by the aux being shown on the thermostat. Sometime if you set the heat up several degrees by thermostat the aux will come on to help the system catch up to the desired temperature setting. The emerg. heat is a way to turn on the AUX manually. If you do not have a heat pump system then it is possible that you have a heat pump thermostat installed on a non heat pump system. Emergency heat and Aux are both the secondary.

Hope this makes sense1

Honeywell Thermostat

Make sure G from indoor unit goes to G on thermostat for fan continous fan, if that doesn't work and you have 24 volts to R and C then the t'stat is bad.
For 2nd stage heat or aux.heat, on the indoor unit you need to make sure the wire W2 from the indoor unit goes to W2 on t'stat.
You don't need any wires from W1on the indoor unit to W1 at the t'stat because with a York heat pump Y1 is the contactor which turns the compressor on and you will get 1st stage heat, and for cooling the t'stat will also bring on O which is the (reversing valve) or cooling changeover relay for the cooling mode.
C = common usually black wire
R = hot usually red wire
Y or Y1 = contactor
W1 = 1st stage heat not needed for heat pump
W2 = Aux. heat indoor heat
G = fan
O = Cooling changeover relay
B = Heating changeover relay
L = System monitor
E = Emergency heat relay
