SOURCE: Scanner Imaging problem
Your scanner’s lock switch may be locking up the carriage unit. Depending on the model you own, your scanner’s lock switch resides in one of two locations. You can find it beneath the scanner itself or in a corner next to the scanner bed after you lift the lid. The switch should be marked with a locked and unlocked padlock symbol; slide the switch to the unlocked padlock to unlock the carriage unit.
It’s also possible that the supplied USB cable is improperly connected to your computer. Connect the cable directly to your PC. Canon’s online documentation indicates that scanners that connect via a USB hub may not work properly. Once you have unlocked your scanner and properly connected it directly to your computer, try to rescan the image.

You were using adifferent system in windows xp.With macintosh, you have to install a mac driver for your canon pixma mp530. Try this link: http://www.canon.com.au/drivers/default.aspx
I had this problem too - then downloaded new drivers and software here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=2613&modelid=9722#DownloadDetailAct
You need to re-install the drivers, then use the MP Toolbox software, and play with the "scan mode"
Good luck!

Hello,
The scanner function is not available when you are connected wireless, you must be connected via USB to your PC for the scanner to function correctly.
