Manitowoc SY0454A. Sometimes it runs fine then all of a sudden after the ice is dropped, the water runs behind the ice plate instead of over it? The plate freezes with no ice and compressor frosts

SOURCE: Food and water freezes but ice cream is soft

Check the door gasket seal.
Open the door for a few seconds and then close.
Immediately open the door again, and, if sealing properly, it should take more pulling force to open the door.

You need a service guy to look at it. It could be water leaking or a simple case that the flap isnt sealing and the ice melts and then freezes the flap open

Hi,

Check to see if the compressor is running... if it is running and not cooling then it may have a refrigerant leak...
If the plate is getting cold but the water is not freezing then check to make sure that the float is not stuck on and the the water just keeps running in... that will keep the water warm enough so that it does not freeze...

The ice thickness probe is a plastic and metal piece hanging from the water distribution area at the top of the ice making plate. It is probably touching or really close to touching the plate. It should be about 1'4" - 5/16" from the plate. It is adjusted by turning the screw located on the top of the sensor facing out at you. turn it clockwise to thicken the ice. the ice should come off in one large piece linked together by a roughly 1/4" sheet across the front. You can get a 1/4" drill bit and lay it on the plate behind the metal tip of the sensing probe and use it as a feeler gauge. Turn the screw until the probe just makes contact with the bit. Remove the bit and try again.

Ice machine locks out.

After ice is produced (usually about 12-15 minutes) harvest is initiated and the ice should drop off of the plate and the curtain opens and closes in 90 seconds or so. If it takes three minutes and the curtain doesn't open and close the unit will go back into freeze. It will do this three times and then lock out.

First - does the unit make ice and start harvest in 12-15 minutes? Second - Is the ice thick enough? it should be one continuous slab with about 1/4" bridge across the front of the slab. IF both of these answers are yes then the plate is either bad or it needs cleaning. You need nickel safe ice machine cleaner and probably an experienced technician to determine if the plate is worth cleaning or is worn out.

This is a QD0452A ice maker it will not cycle properly, water will not shut off, have to watch cycle and manually shut off water ,let ice dump, then turn water back on.

It can be a variety of problems. The door bin switch should turn off the unit when it senses that the door is open (bin full of ice). It is a curtain that opens out to release the ice.
Next it could be the water inlet solenoid, it energizes to allow water in for the ice making process. If it stays constantly on then that would be your problem.
Look at the control board light indicators and you'll know what cycle it is on. These parts are energized and seek help if needed.

one of the plate/s is/are loose on the condenser and the ice is freezing behind the plate and is not releasing during the harvest cycle. Solution with a rubber mallet knock the plate/s back or if loose enough pull out completely, you will just have longer cubes of ice. Hope this helps Tim

I have a model qd0452a manitowoc and it will not stop making ice

Very unusual for one of these to not stop. There is a magnetic proximity switch located on the bottom right side of the water curtain that serves to both cancel a harvest/drop and to shut the unit down on a full bin. When a drop occurs the control board sees a open and then close of the switch and restarts a freeze mode. If the ice drops and the bin is full the curtain is blocked by the ice behind it from closing again and the unit shuts down on a full bin indication. If the curtain does not open and close after 3 hours it would lock the unit out. Therefore I assume that the switch and the board are working. Most likely you either have the unit on a non-Manitowoc bin or are missing a deflector plate in the Manitowoc bin and the ice is falling out of a service door.

Manitowoc ice maker does not produce ice

If it doesn't run at all open the front panel and peer inside of the control box. See if there are any indicator lights on the control board lit or blinking. Check the plastic water curtain on the machine and make sure that the magnet is in place on the bottom right. Will need more information as to what lights are lit. Printed on the board next to each light is its corresponding function or response.
