In a food web, a primary consumer is an organism that feeds on producers (plants) to obtain energy and nutrients. Primary consumers are also known as herbivores or plant-eaters. They occupy the second trophic level in a food chain, with producers at the first trophic level. Examples of primary consumers include rabbits, deer, cows, and many insects that feed on plants.
