How many back-out turns after tightening?
SOURCE: Cleaning Carb Jets
not to a trained ear also go by rpm and spark plug color
NOTE: use copper wire to clean jets, sync is just thottles are same position as all carb's just leave them adjustments alone will be fine if are out use a 1/8 drill an place in between piston/butterfly to carb bore to sync/calibrate
better use a manometer for adjusting screws
depends on condition of org parts
worn = richer running
new = lean an clean
also if changed the exhaust system need to
re-calibrate carbs for max performance
SOURCE: What is the proper adjustment for the pilot air screw?
best thing to do is set it at one turn out then ride it and go a quarter turn at a time to find your sweet spot there all different you need to adjust it to your style of riding and your bike

Try goldwingfacts.com . I'm not familiar with your particular bike but if it has more than one carb you will have to sync the carbs. Usually 3 1/2 turns out will get the bike to start but you will still need to sync the carbs to get it to run correctly. I purchased a set of sync gauges made by Motion Pro to sync all my Hondas.

Sounds like the plungers are in backwards,one side has the groove for the idle screw,the other side has an alignment slot.when you look into the top of the carb with the plunger out,you will see a pin sticking out of one side,that pin must line up with the slot on the plunger that runs from top to bottom

Stock it would be around 2 turns out.
These bikes shipped with only one jet needle (unlike other Yamaha's) the bike's factory jetting is 45 pilot, NBKF needle on the 2nd clip from the top, and 138 main. This bike tends to run a little rich off the bottom, so I'd recommend running a 42 pilot instead. When it's really hot out (over 90) you can run the 135 main jet.
Screwwing with carbs is fact of life with these bikes - you will have to do some tweaking no matter what.
