I have a OKI Microline 490, it prints spine labels for the library. A label stuck between the roller and (I think) the platen. The sheet fed labels jam because of the label stuck to the platen and roller. How can I get them off. Roller does not come out like the old fashioned typewriters. looks like the whole top or shroud has to come off.

should walk you through the steps to clean the platen. I am almost certain that you can remove the knob and clean it. Good Luck

Sounds like the media detect sensor is jammed or broken. Remove the platen and check underneath to make sure a label has become stuck over the sensor which would trick the printer into thinking it always has media.
on the print head there is a lever on the right side, you can adjust the distance from the platen to increase the darkness. this also could be a sign that that print head is wearing out
You do not say how the cards are fed. Are they tractor fed or by sheet feed. I suspect sheet fed and the platen roller has gone shiny. Source a can of platen cleaner to clean the platen roller. DO NOT use alcohol or a spirit based cleaner.
If the problem is with the single sheet feeder try running regular paper through it - does it have the same issue? Is the paper skewing as it is fed in or is the print itself. If the paper is skewing look for problems with the feed rollers possibly a label has become attached to one of the rollers. If not try cleaning them with (90% or better) isopropyl alcohol on a soft rag
