Bypass valve is to bypass the water heater. No bypass valve and always water in tank. Put a bypass valve and shut it up it is like no bypass valve.Open the bypass and shut up the input (cold water) and output hot water) no running water in heater tank but still have cold water in the rest of the house even in the hot side of the faucet.

If your lighting and not getting hot water then you have a valve closed or your by pass is in the wrong position, if it is burning on gas it will heat water
SOURCE: where is the bypass valve on the water heater?
Look at back of water heater, valve(s) should be back there. You want valve open to bottom (cold in) and also valve open to allow hot water out at top. Any valves in between, closed.

The hot side (top line) should have a check valve between tank and water line. I'd replace it. Be sure you install new one the right way. Stem, spring etc should be facing in tank.

I have an Antwood. Tank is very hot. Water from hot water taps is slighty wamed. The flow is good. I dont get it.
