When selecting HDMI mode, the grey band at the top of the screen stays permanently on, but automatically disappears in TV mod. How do I get rid of the band in HDMI?

Press Info/ Display button on TV remote, on-screen display (gray band info) will disappear.

If you press the INPUT button on the TV remote you switch to your various inputs, you have HDMI 1 selected. The info banner will display each time you switch channels or inputs. Press the DISPLAY button on the TV remote. Press again if info does not go away after 10 secs. Check your INITIAL SETTINGS on the TV to fine tune this kind of option.
