Question about Bulova Watches

How to resize watch bands with screws.

My Bulova watch 98C109 band has screw pins instead of ordinary push out pins. How do I resize this watch. Do I just need a very small screwdriver and just screw them out?

You just have to to see the watchmaker. As all watch band screws are made to particular bracelet, it's allmost impossible to find the right one if you are not in watch repair business. It will not cost too much and will save your time and nerves if you'll ask the watchmaker.
Find your nearest watchmaker and ask for help.

SOURCE: Watch band resizing

This band requires a pair of band pliers to pull out a U shaped tab that connect the two links. Sometimes you can get a small screw driver in to start the tab coming out and pull it the rest of the way out with a pair of pliers. The tab is located in the middle. You'll note that, if you look at the side of the band, there are three layers of metal. The tab is in the middle and slides out. If you look at the inside of the band, the side that would be on your wrist, you will see the slot that the watch plier would fit into to start sliding the tab out.
* I do not recommend this repair for the layperson. I suggest seeing a watch maker/technician.

How do you remove links

There are small pins that are friction fit into the band. You will need a small screwdriver or something the less than the diameter of a paper clip. Using a small hammer tap the pin out in the direction of the arrow which is indicated on the back of the band. Do so for however many links that need to be removed. After doing this then put the band back together and replace the pin by taping it in until it is flush. Use a thin cloth over the pin when taping so you don't scratch the case. Good luck. If you need a professional go to a jeweler to help you out.. Thank you, Gabe.

I have a swiss legend keramica and i cant ajust the bracelet

Most bracelet adjustments require a special tool that is only found in a jewelry store, or your watch can be shortened by the manufacturer. Many watches have pins that push out if you look on the back of the band there should be arrows the pins push in that direction if you have something small enough to fit it the hole, be very careful to put the pin back in the same way. Occasionally some watch bands are not pins they are screws and it can be very difficult to tell the difference between the two. If the watch band has a screw it requires a very small screwdriver and you must be careful NOT to strip the screwhead! You can also shorten some watches by just moving the pin in the band buckle if you have a small tool you should be able to do this yourself, BUT wear glasses because pins will spring out, keep pointed away from your face. Hope this helps!

How can I shorten the watch band. I've tried pushing the pins, but they don;t seem to move. What is the significance of the arrows on the back of the band segments? Thank you for your help!

The arrows show you the direction to push out the pins.
  • Look for an arrow on the inside of your watch band. The direction the arrow is pointing is the direction the pin should slide out of the band. If your pin is screwed in, you may not see an arrow on the inside of your band.
  • 2 Look on the edge of the watch band for a small round object, the pin. If the pin head is flat, then it needs to be pushed out. If the pin head has a screw driver groove, then it needs to be screwed out. Depending on the type of watch pin you have, take a sharp pointed tool or a tiny screw driver from a hobby kit or watch tool kit and place it on the head of the pin. You should be looking at the end of the pin on the opposite side from where the arrow is pointing.
  • 3 Push on the sharp tool to push the pin out of the watch band. You will need to use force to push the pin out. If your pin is screwed in, gently unscrew the pin until it becomes loose. Remove the pin with your fingertips. Make sure to put the pin in a safe place, because you will need it again when resizing the watch band.

    Resize the watch

If the band is screws then a small screw driver will do the trick. Make sure you use the right size screw driver so you do not strip the screws.
If the band is put together with cotter pins you can push out the cotter pins with a small awl or punch. You want to apply pressure to the end of the pin that is not split or appears to be smooth. Usually when you have cotter pins they are arrows or indicators on the band to tell you which way the pins come out. Make sure you put the pins back the same way they came out.

I have a watch i need to take links out

I have a similar watch band and the little grooves are really not for screwdrivers. It is a split pin that just pushes out. I use a jewler's screwdriver or a small nail to push them out because I don't have a pin punch that size. Hope that helps.

Alllways try screwdriver first. If the pin doesn'y come out when you unscrewing it, that means you have pins instead. Use small steel pin and hammer to drive the pins out. Make sure that the split end comes out of the hole first.
