Question about Dyson Vacuums

1 Answer

Dyson vacuum I caugh a string on a throw rug while vaccuming. I untangled it and cleaned the beater bar no problem. When I started the vacuum again the ball would not turn completely. I removed the ball cover and the filter had popped out - I cleaned it and replaced it. The filter clicks into place but when I turn the vacuum on and move the vacuum it pops out again making it impossible to push. I have all hard surface floors and a few throw rugs. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help

SOURCE: noisy on rugs!

Are the rugs long haired or short haired? Most likely the suction is just causing the noise when it picks up the rug and the buzz saw could be the beater bar hitting the rug then. I actually own a DC14 and it does the same thing and the rugs like to be dragged along. Nothing really to fix this, just the way it is. You could try it with the beater bar raised and see how well it works then but this sounds normal.

Have a good day

SOURCE: I ran my vacuum against

Hi,

There is a switch next to the main power switch on the handle which turns the brushbar on and off. When the beater bar becomes obstructed as in your case, there is a safety feature which cuts power to the beater bar. All that needs to be done in most cases is to turn this switch off and back on again and the beater bar should resume operation.

The beater bar on / off / reset switch is the yellow switch to the left of the main power button if you are standing in front of the hoover:

Reset the beater bar and you should be back up and running.

If you have already done this or it doesn't solve your problem, please post back for further assistance.

PLEASE NOTE: This reset method is for the Dyson DC17 ANIMAL as stated above. If you have a different version of the DC17, please post back for alternative instructions and state which version of DC17 you have.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

My Dyson vaccum leaves a row of multiple lines on my plush carpet. I've never had s vaccum leave more than the two wheel lines. I called customer service and they had no solution for me!

It's the beater bar brush. Turn it over and use a screwdriver or knife, and run it the full width of the beater bar to remove the hair and string and other debris that get wound up on the beater bar-NOTE you do NOT have to remove the beater bar or take apart anything. As long as the beater bar spins, and there are no missing sections on the beater bar- this will work. Beater bar could also be worn down- be sure that the bristles extend past the bottom of the vacuum- ALWAYS DO THIS WITH THE POWER OFF

you may have to take the beater bar off and clean out the hair, and string off of both ends, thats where the bearings are.

On my bissel powergroom helix the beater bar isn't spinning and smoke comes out, how can I fix this? I've owned it for 3 months and haven't vacuumed anything that shouldn't be vacuumed.

The beater bar might be jammed and the belt is slipping and getting very hot (smoking)
With the vuccumm unplugged from the wall try tuning the beater by hand
if it is jammed it could be a build up of hair or string at the ends
clean it out and try again

When I use the vacuum it smells like something burning but it does work. How do I fix this? Thank you Sharon Post

Hi ssharonxxx...

Sounds like you have hair, strings, debris caught on the beater bar and it is causing the belt to burn on the beater bar or motor.
Remove the bottom of your vacuum and clean, oil and replace the beater bar, that should solve your burning smell problem.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

BEATER BAR WILL NOT WORK. I ACCIDENTLY RAN VACUM OVER SMALL THROW RUG WHICH GOT CAUGHT IN BEATER BAR AND IT STOPPED AND I COULD SMELL BURNING. I SHUT IT OFF RIGHT AWAY. WHAT DO I DO?

remove the bottom of the machine, and if your lucky re attach the belt, if not replace it , you need to remove the beater bar to do this, so prior to taking it out, look at the ends so you know where they are and the positioning before you remove it for easy reattachment

Hy, I have a dyson 14 that sometimes make a terrible racket when I am vacuuming rugs. This happens even after I've cleared the roller brush of strings, hair, etc.

Check the beater bar to see if it turns freely. It should spin real easy. If it takes just a little effort, your problem would be the beater bar is binding on one or both of the end caps. When the bar gets bound up, there is a clutch with three balls in it which slip in and out of their position which cause the loud noise you describe - like something is caught up in it. To solve, you need to remove the bottom plate and pull up one end of the beater bar - the end opposite the belt is easiest. Pull off the end cap (it just slides on. You may have to rotate some). If the shaft comes out, that's okay. That just means the shaft came out of the opposite end cap. Clean out both ends and reassemble. Before putting on the bottom plate, check to see if the beater bar turns freely. If it still makes the sound, I would suspect the clutch has a bad or broken internal spring. This would require repair or replacement of the clutch.

How can I tell if I need to replace the beater bar? I replaced the belt but now it seems too tight and the bar doesn't want to spin.

The belt is supposed to be tight, but the beater bar bearings are probably full of string, hair, and thread. Remove the bar, remove, clean, and oil the bearings (3-1 or similar). Leave the belt off for a moment, and install just the bar. Spin it with your fingers--it should revolve freely--if not, redo the clean/lube process again making sure to clean the inside of the bearings with a Q-tip swab. Once the bar spins freely, remove it to slide on the belt and reinstall. Hope this helps!

No suction for rugs but the hose works fine. Removed the canister and suction is at that point

Hello,

Remove the base plate and beater bar. Clean the suction cavity behind the beater bar. That's where they almost always plug up.

Beaters stop when vaccuming rug...didn't when new

I believe you need to change the belt that drives the brushes. When it gets stretched out, it will just spin on the axle of the motor or spin on the brush and smoke.

Beater bar has stopped turning

All beater and rotating brush bars are fairly easy to get to with a couple of screw on the bottom of your wan. They are driven by a belt and these belts come off, break, or the bar itself is stuck with rug material. Unplug your vacumn and get our screwdriver. It;s easy to figure out once inside the wan.
