This one sounds like the defrost timer is not working and you are not getting a defrost cycle every 6-8 hours (or when needed). Another issue could be that air (moisture) is getting in from a leaky door seal, etc. and causing the freeze up. If you have a sealed system problem where the cooling coils are not uniformly frosted up then the defrost thermostat will not "know" there is an ice condition and therefore not go into defrost mode (same issue if the defrost t-stat is bad). After you have ALL the ice out of the unit it would be a good idea to take the interior rear cover off so you can view the coils. Start the freezer back up and watch over the next 1/2 hour or so to see that the entire coil is frosting up uniformly. If it isn't you may have a plugged system, a leak causing low refrigerant, etc. If over time the coils look uniformly frosted up you may have a defective defrost heating element itself (no heat, no defrost sort of thing). The defrost elements can be checked with a multimeter for continuity if you know how to do that sort of thing. It's hard to know a person's ability by these forums or if they can tackle certain test procedures.

Once I saw that the drain tube went up over the coil before draining into the evaporator pan I decided to buy a small piece of flexible plastic tubing and re-route the tube so the water could freely flow down hill. It's been over two months with no additional problems. I can assume that since the water drains freely it doesn't stay trapped in the elbow freeze and the cause the collector tray to ultimately overflow.

you most likely have a defrost problem.or a clogged drain.you need to check your defrost heater defrost timer and thermostat.if ice is formed over drain then you can unclog drain with hot water.you will see when it is unclogged, water will run down drain without running over into bottom of freezer.

Try setting it to lower temperature. If that don't work the thermostat is bad.
If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. But if the freezer also gets warmer it can be failure of the auto defrost making the vents choked. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Since the fridge has cooling the compressor /gas pressure is good.It is possible that the frost has blocked the cool air flow from the freezer to the fridge area.
To confirm shut off the fridge, Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.

So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution. The defrost timer is located at the bottom, check the connections to the heaters and the thermostat.

Suspect the fault can be the defrost timer to confirm shut off the fridge, after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
