If I remember correctly those have a thin one ring type belt that powers the reel. You might check to see if it's missing, broken or off the pulley.
yep. found the belt, and its loose. rigged it for now, but will try to get a belt tomorrow. thank you for answering my question
The pickup reel on the bell & howell 253A is driven by a flexible steel cable. How do you open the case to see and connect it on the inside or get to any O ring that drives it?

SOURCE: belle & Howell Super 8 Projector model 254RS loading problem
Don't have the motor switch in the still position when loading -make sure it is on FORWARD. Look at the little holes in the film and make sure the film is on the same side as the little grooves on the drive gear.
PS -let the bulb cool off before try to move the projector ,the bulbs are very expensive and hard to find.
If you do use the still position to view a frame do it for just a few seconds or the bulb will burn the film. Good luck- Tom.

SOURCE: How do I thread the film through an 8mm B&H Projector
http://www.folkstreams.net/vafp/stream.php?id=97
It's about four and a half minutes long, and shows how to clean the various components that need cleaning beforehand as well as how to thread the projector.
However, I wish you good bloody luck on finding a bulb, if you don't have one that still works. From the look of the unit, it uses a DAR bulb, which was delisted (read: went out of production) thirty years ago. You can sometimes find new old-stock (NOS) DAR bulbs on eBay, but expect to pay $30 to $35 apiece plus shipping for them.

Have you switched the switch on the front? It is black and about 1 1/2 inches tall. Don't worry I had the same problem at first with mine!! ;) I hope I can help!
