Kenmore Oven Problem I have a Kenmore 79012 Range. The burners and broiler work fine. The ignitor comes on in the oven, but it will not light. After a few minutes I can smell gas, but the ignitor is still on.

The ignitor has to be on before the gas valve opens up and until the stove recognizes a flame, if it doesnt the gas will shut off and the ignitor will cool off, If you use the self clean setting to clean the oven you will destroy the ignitor much faster because they are only rated for about 1000 degreese for just a minute and self clean keeps it around 800 for an hour or so. You may just need to replace the ignitor.

Hello Everett,

The problem beleive it or not is that the bake ignitor is weak ,and it is not drawing the proper amprage to open the gas valve. If you have a amp meter access the wires to the bake ignitor(usually behind the storage drawer) and check for 3.3-3.6 amps when set to bake ignitor by clamping the meter around ONE wire wire of ignitor make sure only one wire, either one and not both.
if amp draw less than that replace bake ignitor. If you dont have amp meter take my word for it since in my 30 years appliance repair career i have when the ignitor comes on, that it's weak, to be the problem 100% of the time

Oven not heating properly

Hello- Sometimes ignitors work enough to light burner, but not enough to step up gas flow at regulator. Lower burner ignitor is bad if resistance is less than 4ohms. New part through local app. parts store.- 50-75$. Ignitor is mounted next to burner under bottom pan in oven. Plug is behind pan drawer. Fairly easy to replace. hope this helps- Thanks- ED

Kenmore oven wont light

I am not sure what model or make you have to be precise but replacing the oven ignitor is relatively simple. Gain access to the bake burner area. There are two mounting screws which secure the old ignitor to the bake burner. Remove these screws and then follow the wires to their respective connections. Make the connection change and mount your new ignitor. If I can help further, I am here...

Brand new gas range

i would look into the valve/regulater at which you connected the gas line, off to the side or somewhere on the regulater itself there should be a shut off for the oven control, simply flick to open positon and you should start right up. it would shut off gas to oven but allow burners to light.
