A few times a day, water will drip from the spout of the fill valve into the tank for several minutes. Also, once or twice a day, I hear a hissing sound, as if the tank is filling, for a couple of minutes when it hasn't been flushed. I thought that water leaking into the bowl might be causing this, but no water is leaking into the bowl. The water level appears to be OK too, as it doesn't reach the top of the overflow tube.
Remove and clean the flush valve and the flush valve seat(it is the flap that opens up to allow water to flush the toilet). Once the edges of the valve and the seat are cleaned, possibly with "0000" grit bulldog steel wool, it should not leak anymore. To make sure it is not leaking, once tank has refilled completely, put some food die in the tank. If, after 10-15 minutes, the water in the toilet bowl is colored, you have a leak from the flush valve. Replacing the flush valve is very easy - just bring the old one with you to the hardware/plumbing store and ask for a replacement. Blessings and good luck!!
check that the fill valve was installed correctly
adjust the float level so that when full the cistern water level is around 1/2" below the over flow pipe end
what you have now is that the inlet water is not being shut off correctly and the water is still coming in and flowing out of the overflow
Testimonial: "Hi, Bill: Thank you for your response. What you said about inlet water not shut off correctly makes sense to me. But a new fill valve was installed and it stops perfectly just 1" below overflow top. Do I need to install another one to correct inlet water shut off?"
