Starter won't engage when turning over the key.

Are you getting Voltage to the Starter when Turning the key?
Should have 12V at the large wire on the Starter when Key is turned.

If not, follow that wire back to a Relay. See if you have voltage at the second large wire on the relay. That second wire should come directly from the battery.

Mge 4000 will not start

This type of generator has an oil-level sensor to prevent operation when it is too low. Check to see that the oil is filled to the right mark on the dipstick, and be sure it is on level ground when you do this.

My onan 6500 gen cranks slow and won't start new batterys and clean cables 12.5 v on one side of soleniod and 7.5 v on other

Your solenoid might be bad or your starter motor might need new carbon brushes. If you can take out the starter motor and see if you can manually rotate it, if it is not to hard to turn it, if hard to turn manually your starter might have something bad inside. A bad bearing or bushing. One more thing try this while cranking try to tap the starter motor.

Can I convert a Yamaha EC 5000DV generator to electric start? Where can I get those parts. rich

You can convert it BUT.... It will require spending almost as much on parts and shipping as this generator is worth.

You will need a new flywheel. Wiring harness for the start circuit, Key / switch assy, modified contgrol panel, Starter & solenoid, mounting bolts, a battery and battery holder. Additionally you will will need a voltage requlator.
Each of the parts will have to be special ordered from a Yamaha service center type shop. There is not a kit form for your unit. Depending on exactly which engine you have the 357 CC or the 410 CC you may not even be able to do it at all.

I just looked into doing the same thing for a Robin RGV 6100. "The dealers have you by the private parts!!!" The cost was about $200.00 less than buying a new generator of the equal size with an electric start system. The only thing I would not have had to buy for that conversion would be the regulator due to it being an inverter generator type unit.

Thanks for using FixYa.

IF IT IS A HONDA ,KEN . JUST UN PLUG THE LOW OIL CUTOUT SWITCH JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE MANY OF THEM GIVE TROUBLE.
IS IT TURNING OVER AND JUST NOT STARTING,OR DOES IT REFUSE TO CRANK? IF THAT IS THE CASE CHECKTHAT YOU HAVE A GOOD EARTH CONTACT.LET ME KNOW WHAT MODEL THE MOTOR IS "YOUDOIT"

Boat starter motor

If the pinion moves up then the solenoid is fine, but if the starter does not spin then the starter motor is bad. Will need new starter.

Generator won't start & now starter will not shut off when it has power

I have seen this happen in cars- the problem is most likel the ignition unit -they do not spend a lot of money on them in production. So here is what is happening . When you are putting key in and out metal filings are being deposited inside unit- this is now causing a short and draining batteries. Start here. This happened with cars a few years ago and they were catching fire in driveways.Call dealer and get replacement ignition- should be cheap fix. Good luck.
