If the device is purchased with a diff account you need to follow deregister process first. There can be an issue with the network too as device will no register without active internet connection. here are the steps to register kindle device.

  • From Home, go to Menu, and then select Settings. Then select option My Account (newer generation devices) or Registration (earlier generation devices)
  • Now you get 2 options if you have an existing account or need new account. Select the appropriate option and follow simple onscreen instructionss or contact kindle support
  • To deregister the Old Kindle:
  • From Home, go to Menu, and then select Settings. Then select option My Account (newer generation devices) or Registration (earlier generation devices).
  • Now hit Deregister Device & If prompted, select Deregister again to confirm.
Once you are done with this process proceed with the registration steps again and make sure you have the correct password to successfully register your kindle device . Now can register kindle device from a computer or from device itself.

If my suggestions do not clear up the problem, consider resubmitting the query and including what the error message is. I am assuming that you acquired the Kindle from a retail seller in an unopened box. If it was an eBay seller and the box had been opened, you may want to return it to the seller; it may have been pre-registered by someone else. Moving on...

You might want to go to my last suggestion first! There appears to be new Kindle software and in the past, if one did not have an update, there was a problem with registration. And at the bottom of all my suggestions is a link regarding updates.

If the updates do not fix the problem with registration, you may try a hard reset which restores the device to factory settings. (Sadly, that means it will remove the updates, too, which will have to be reinstalled.)

Try a hard reset. This "restores" a device to factory settings. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Next, release that button. Next, Wait two minutes for it to reboot. Next, slide the switch to turn it on.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap Wireless.
  2. Verify that Airplane Mode is Off.
  3. Next to Wi-Fi, tap On.
  4. Tap a network to connect to it.
Try to register it, again.

If this does not work, plug the kindle into the charger for 15 minutes and then try a reboot with the charger attached. Then try to register it, again.

I am providing a link to the latest Kindle software updates. If your Kindle does not have the current updates, it may not register. This has been a problem with registering Kindles in the past. And the site does say there is a new update.

SOURCE: I just received a Kindle Paperwhite, I own two other Kindles. The new one is asking me to register, are my previous two not registered ?

Yes they could well be registered. New ones seem to be called "Richard's 3rd Kindle" or similar.

I lost my Kindle. How do I transfer my books from the Kindle App on my Android phone to my new Kindle? The App shows that they are in the cloud.

Hi, there is no need to try to transfer content from your Android Kindle App to your Kindle as all content that is stored in the Kindle Cloud can be downloaded directly to your new Kindle once it's registered. Even the content that is downloaded to your Android remains on the Kindle Cloud. To see if your new Kindle is registered, click here and log in to your Kindle account.

Click the Device tab. If your new Kindle isn't already registered, you should have the option to register it. Or, alternately, you can register your new Kindle using Menu and Settings on the Kindle itself.

Once your Kindle is registered you can simply touch *Cloud* on the Home screen when connected to Wifi or 3G and examine the list of books, etc. Touch the ones you wish to download to your device and they should start downloading where they will be stored for off-line reading.

To register your new kindle you need to go to and follow the directions.

Register Your Kindle Register your Kindle to your Amazon account to buy and deliver Kindle content to your device.

To buy and deliver Kindle content, you'll need to connect wirelessly and register your Kindle to an Amazon account. Registering also allows you to transfer purchases between Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps.
  1. From Home, press the Menu button, and then select Settings. Select Registration.
  2. Specify the Amazon account you want to use for your Kindle:
    • If you already have an Amazon account: Select this option. Enter the e-mail and password associated with your Amazon account. Select Register. Your name will appear as the Registered User when registration is complete.
    • If you do not have an Amazon account: Select this option and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a new Amazon account.

Go to and log onto your account using a PC. You can then 'manage your devices' on one of the pages that are part of that section.
