My norcold refrigerator has a Very strong ammonia smell,it has been smelling for almost two weeks, how do I get rid of the smell, I shut it off but it is stll leaking ammonia

I would first check to see if there is a flame present. If there is, and there is no cooling at all, make sure you are perfectly level. If you are level, check for yellow powder or residue back around the cooling unit or any smell of ammonia. Travel refrigerators use an ammonia coolant instead of freon. So the smell is telling you that you have a leak in the sealed system.

Suggest you look for a replacement fridge OR a rebuilt unit because that is usually cheaper than taking it to a service center for repairs.

Make sure your roof vent is not clogged immediately. If you are in a full service park, you should be running on electricity not propane. You don't describe the gasses you are smelling, if it is ammonia, your frig is probably done for.

Ammonia is the primary ingredient in the cooling process. What happens is the ammonia is boiled and then sprayed throug an orfice. The spraying creates the cooling (heat removing) effect. If you are smelling ammonia, your boiler has developed a leak.

You can purchase replacement units to install in your present frig. Some people have success with this. My experience was not so good. I spent about $225.00 plus shipping for a rebuilt unit (with a 'core' charge). I did the work myself. I got about a year out of the rebuilt unit before I simply replaced the frig with a new replacement 3 way Norcold. My new Norcold was much improved over the earlier model and included a ice maker! It was expensive, however, at more than $1300.00. Strong Ammonia smell is dead give away for LEAK. Ammonia is the chief ingredient in the absorption type cooing system. Probably not economical to repair. For a second opinion, contact a Dometic Authorized Service Center.

These often have a recall kit installed that has a thermal fuse in the burner area....when the burner overheats the thermal fuse shuts the hole thing down to prevent fire, the ammonia smell is probably from the cooling unit. check under your burner, to see if you see a bright yellow powder or liquid if you do, your cooling unit is for sure bad and is dangerous to run. The thermal fuse shuts the fridge down completely and can be reset by pushing in the button in the middle.

You have a bad cooling unit. This is the entire assembly on the back of the refrigerator that draws the heat out of the box. You will have to either have the cooling unit replaced or buy a new refrigerator. The cost difference is usually around 200 to 500 depending.

If the there is a strong ammonia odor and no cooling, then you probably have a leak in the system somewhere. These types of absorption units must be repaired in a specialty shop. The most common place for a leak is the condenser coil, but can also be the evaporator inside the unit, if the odor seems to emanate from that area.
