Try putting the card in the card reader on your computer to check if images are being recorded then you may need a repair.

There is a button on the back that can be pressed called Disp. (stands for Display). There are two or three settings it flips through each time you press the button. Press this button a few times to cycle through the choices in each of the playback and camera mode to see if this resolves your issue. Happy snapping...

SOURCE: Canon Powershot SD1000: LCD screen display

Hopefully you resolved this already. If not, push the "DISP." button left of the MENU button. Pushing it gives you three options: black (for discreet shooting so your LCD doesn't give garner dirty looks from fellow concert goers), liveview, and liveview with info overlayed (shooting mode, ISO, etc.). Good luck!

I have the same basic problem.

The camera sensor is bad. It can be replaced if you still have warranty. If its out of warranty, get a new camera - the cost to repair = cost of new camera.

Turn on camera and can't see anything but the display

If the display is blank or black without image in camera mode but the playback of previous picutures are displaying, you have a case of faulty CCD chip. If the previous images does not display also then some type of display circuit problem. If the CCD chip problem, send the camera to Canon for "CCD Advisory Repair" which Canon will service the camera for free. -James. For further assistance by email, go to www.camerarepair.com

Blank black screen for my canon powershot S1 IS digital camera

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

Shooting mode will not operate

Your camera has a defective CCD imager. Please return the camera to Canon in New Jersey and they will replace the CCD at no charge to you. This is a known issue and should be covered under extended warranty. Good luck my friend. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
