Yes it should if you are running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8. You just connect to the unit using a spare USB port on your laptop and a plug-plug USB cable. It has it's own power so you'll need a mains socket. This means you can unplug your laptop and leave any devices charging on the docking station USBs. Your laptop should auto-instal the station. I believe there is a table/support available which combines with this unit. There a varying prices for this unit so look around.
Fix it yourself, you need either a new battery and or motherboard. Relativly easy to do! 10 small torx screws for motherboard and 2 ribbons, then a few more screws and loosen the harddrive and screen for battery
Battey and motherboard for less than £50 pounds off ebay
Your only option is to purchase another Home dock for your TomTom GO 510. The 510, 710, and 910 all use the same dock. The cheapest place to purchase a home dock is ebay. The answer to the second part of your question is no, you cannot purchase a usb cable to connect your TomTom GO 710 to your pc. The TomTom GO series uses a proprietary dock.
I have found a trick for those bad battery ,but you lose your waranty you need to open your tomtom , behind the screen you wil find the battery(for the Go 710 it is an 3.7 V ,2400mAh,samsung ICR18650-24) you find 3 wires : red, black, yellow cut them of at the half of the wire size , then cut off your car loader wire (tomtom)(5v), you will see again 3 wires inside :red, black, white connect the red with red, black with black, white with yellow (the best thing is to make a little hole in the cover to pass the wire, so it will be beter for closing the all thing) I did it and it works pretty fine ,I had save 30 dollars ;) :D I did in approximatly 30 min remember you will have no battery any more and no waranty of tomtom! It only whorks then with your car loader tomtom
1. Press and hold the laptop power button down, for 10 seconds. 2. Now remove the battery 3. Repeat step one above 4. Let the laptop sit for 10 minutes. 5. Reinstall the battery 6. Make sure docking station is unplugged, and insert laptop into docking station. 7. Plug in power supply (to dock) 8. Start the laptop. 9. IF IT STARTS, let it run a while to see if the battery is charging 10. Remove it from the dock and repeat steps 1-5 above and then go directly to 8 (start without connecting dock).
CONCLUSIONS: If the laptop started in the dock on step 9 but not 10 (only on battery), your battery or power regulator circuit may be damaged. However, if it starts in step 10 but not step 9, your docking station -or its AC power supply may be damaged Let me know how this comes out, please.
Reset the unit by pushing a bent paperclip or pin into the hole on the bottom marked 'reset' turn it back on, plug it in & charge it via USB overnight or as long as you can in the car, make sure the led on the top is green, tap the bottom right of the screen & check the battery symbol on the unit says charging underneath.
Found the reset switch on GO 4V00.710 - look underneath, where the unit docks - small button - need a paper clip to press
Also, reset switch is documented in the Quick Start Guide - see label 'F' in the 'Your TomTom GO' what's in the box.
