SOURCE: Re-assembling lower unit of 40HP Mercury 4 stroke
I found a lower gear case assembly diagram at http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/6995/240.cfm which helped me understand how the shift mechanism works. This clued me in to the fact that I was missing the cam follower rod which I then found I had inadvertently mopped up in a shop towel when cleaning up spilled gear oil. After that discovery, assembly and operation was quick and successful.

Hi richard w jones, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Is it please possible to obtain your exact model and serial for identification of the right electric circuitry?
If its a Four stroke, you'll find in the frond of the engine (under the hood of course)a small black 'rubber' box with 2 red wires. Remove the cap, there is a 20amp (yellow) fuse in it.
On a 2-stroke, the fuse is in the vincinity of the electrical connector for the cable to the remote control. It's also a 20amp fuse.
