SOURCE: oil around spark plugs on 1992 honda accord

Yes the oil can cause the car to lose spark, the oil leak could be caused by the valve cover gaskets around the spark openings, but 9 times out of 10 it is the spark plug tube "O" rings. The top of the valve train comes off of the head, the "O" rings are between the two halves, that will fix the oil leak.

SOURCE: INTERMITTENT SPARK

Make sure the spark plugs are not platinum or anything other than regular copper plugs. The S-series uses a "waste spark" system and will destroy platinum plugs. Regular copper NGKs that came from the factory with the car work the best.

How do you know it is a spark problem? Are you able to verify spark, fuel and compression?

I ask because the usual solution to what you are describing in your problem is replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS). The factory one is plastic and cracks. When it cracks it sends the PCM a signal that the engine is 40F below zero. The PCM will compensate by dumping A LOT of fuel into the engine to try and warm it up. It will cause all kinds of starting and idling problems.

Autozone or the dealer sells the better brass tipped one. The ECTS is located just under and behind the upper radiator hose. You'll need to remove the air intake tubing to see it or get to it. It has two wires going to it and goes into a connector. Squeeze the connector at the "ears" and it will come off.

Now is the time to check the connector for corrosion and gunk. If there is clean it out very well. If there is no gunk or corrosion continue on.

A 10MM DEEP well socket will take it out. Swap it quickly because some coolant will come out (a couple of ounces). Hand tighten it and snug it with the socket (not too much because it will strip out). Connector back on (either direction it's non polar). Put the intake back on and enjoy better starting and idling.

SOURCE: mower won't start spark plug turns black

Black carbon fouling on the plug is a sign of the engine running too rich, start by replacing the air filter and plug and try again.

Honda gxv 160

How old is the mower? Is it OHV or flathead? Does it burn oil? Low compression in these small engines is usually caused by bad rings. Try putting one-half teaspoon of motor oil in the cylinder, crank the engine without the spark plug in, replace the spark plug and try to start the engine. If it starts and runs, then the rings need to be replaced. By putting oil in the cylinder, you re-seal the rings to the cylinder wall, this is only temporary. Deglaze the cylinder wall and replace the rings and you should be good to go.

I have a troybilt mower with a honda 160 engine (#gcv160an5a) that will not start. I have cleaned the carb, replaced the spark plug, cleaned the air filter, new gas and oil. The spark plug is dry after...

You may have to replace the carb. But before you do.Check the the fuel line. There is a small screen in the carb,it may be clogged.Inside the tank is a small cylindrical filter, make sure it is good.Break the fuel line at the in line filter,to make sure gas is getting to there,if it is the problem is in the carb.

Bought a Troy TB110 oush mower at end of last summer. I stored it all winter without opening box. I got it out today, put together and started it. It is leaking oil and blowing white smoke- What do I...

You must have stored it with the spark plug end down. This has caused the oil to get by the rings and on top of the piston. Pull spark plug out and pull starter cord to clear excess oil , put plug back in . Check oil , start mower and let it run until the excess oil burns off and some of it may still be in the muffler. Mower is ok. Some body borrowed my mower and did this resulting in the same problem.

Honda push mower wont run right

I have the GVC160 motor....same problems....just found this info (see link),...and it turned out that Honda used a NGK spark plug that was defective,....I couldn't believe that is all it was...after changing the carb (new),...adjusting valves....etc.. I just went down and bought a new spark plug.....and it runs great!!
----
BEFORE go thru all of the advice and look at most other Honda web info.....go and buy a brand new spark plug and start with that! It appears Honda used a NGK spark plug in the past that fails after some time....giving the syptoms of problems with the carb, sticky valve, etc. Do not try to clean and use the old spark plug!! Check this out....it was the answer I was looking for after hours of work, reading, and talking to Honda dealers - http://forum.doityourself.com/outdoor-power-equipment-small-engines/261743-honda-lawnmower-starting-then-cutting-out.html
