Question about Curtis Televison & Video
SOURCE: DVD player
DO NOT LOOK AT AN OPERATING LASER INSIDE A CD PLAYER OR DVD MACHINE; DOING SO CAN DAMAGE YOUR EYES!
ANY OF THE BELOW DESCRIBED PROCEDURES MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR EQUIPMENT MORE
THAN IT IS, SO PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK SO I AM NOT ACTUALLY
RECOMMENDING THEM :
Often, in cases like this, the focusing lens for the laser is dirty or
out of alignment. I don't know how good you are with tools and
electronics, but one often has to take out the dvd player to reach the
lens directly to clean it. You'd have to be very careful not to
scratch the lens or leave any lint, even a tiny hair; you can also
knock the movable trolly out of alignment.
I've had good luck with a bit of 90% rubbing alcohol and a cue tip, but
some say you need special cleaner. Sometimes a blast of compressed air
from one of those cans specially designed for cleaning electronics
parts is enough to do the job.
If you can see the lens and you have a long enough red plastic tube
that comes with the can you may be able to blast it clean without
disassembly. Note that there is a focusing lens and a laser with a
lens on it; both often need cleaning, but the lower lens is generally
inaccessible without significant disassembly.
Lastly, there are a number of good DVD and CD repair hints for this
exact problem because it's fairly common and the fix is generic. You
can find these on the web with Google, Just type in key words like "
DVD Can't read disc error", or something similar.
GOOD LUCK!

You need to convert avi files to dvd format before burning, otherwise the player won't recognize them. Google "avi to dvd" and you'll find a number of free or pay programs that will do the conversion for you.

Do you have the owner's manual?
If not, you can download it at www.curtisint.com at the support section search for "Manuals And Downloads" thumbnail at the top of the site, and then, search
for your model in the manual catalog as DVD 2100 and download it! It's in PDF format and you will need Adobe Reader if you don't have it, download it from www.adobe.com/reader .
For your solution:
- open your manual at P-35 GENERAL SETTINGS - "Restore Factory Settings".
- With the remote control, press "SETUP" and you should see a menu box with:
1- General Settings
2- Playback Settings
3- Record Settings
4- Language Settings
5- Channel Scan
6- Clock Settings
- Choose the General settings and then go to "Restore Factory Settings"
Restore Factory Settings
1. In the General Settings menu, use the or button to select
the Restore Factory Settings item and press the SELECT
button. The OSD will display as follows.
2. Use the or button to select OK .
3. Press the SELECT button to restore all default settings.
When your unit doesn't work properly, it may probably result
from some wrong settings. Please try the Restore Factory
Setting function to see if the unit can restore to its normal
I hope that will help you! If you need more details, don't hesitate to e-mail me!

First, try playing a regular music CD and see if that works. Next step would be to get a laser lens cleaner disc and run that in the machine. They come in both CD and DVD styles. You most likely won't get a DVD version to work since it's not reading DVDs, but you might get lucky and get a CD version to work, thus the reason for trying a music CD in the player.
If the cleaning doesn't work, or you can't play a CD either, then something has most likely died. There are really only two things that could go wrong with a DVD player, either the spindle motor (spins the disc) dies, or the laser dies. Both are somewhat common problems on low-end electronics. They can be fixed, but with low-end units, like those made by Curtis, it would cost you less to toss it out and buy a new unit.
