I have a Dynex TV that went black. I hear sound and see indicator lights and see picture and text when i hold a flashlight up to the screen. Could it be the inverter?

If your a technician you can if not take it in as this could be several things causing this.

Shine a flashlight on the lcd up close when it is on. If you can see the picture, it is the inverter

put a flashlight behind the TV screen or front screen close, just try as close as possible, if you see image that means that the Back-Light inverte is defective or the screen lamps are not working, if deres no imagen the video card is not working (main board)

Find out first is the tv black light that supplies the light so it projects a picture is not turning on. Shine a bright light like a flashlight in at the screen and cup your hands around your face or have another person do that. You should see a faint picture. If not most likely you have a black light malfunction. change channels while doing this and try accessing the menu. If you see all of this faintly with a flashlight, then it is the black light inverter which may be part of the power supply. Here is a link to Ebay. Power supply caps or backlight inverter! Common issues with LCD flat screens for some reason.

If you have sound on the stations this is a problem in the display. Take bright flashlight and hold it against the screen. Look for an image around the edge of the flashlight. If you see an image then it's one of three problems;
1) The inverter board is bad.
2) The CCFT (cold cathode fluoresent light) are bad.
3) The power supply to the inverter board is bad.
Someone knowledgeable in electronics can replace the bad part(s).

if its an LCD check by holding a flashlight to the screen looking for the pic. if u see the pic the backlight/inverter has failed.
