SOURCE: Can't get the battery cover
I just figured it out.
Holding the device so that the ear piece part is pointing towards you, locate a little raised arrow on the top of the device, just below the battery cover.
The arrow points to a little hole, which you need to push something sharp like a pen point into. This should release the cover, which you can now slide off.
Mine did not release so easily, so I also used a flathead screwdriver (a pretty small one, only about a 1/3 inch wide) to drive in between the body and the battery cover, twisting it off as I pushed a pen into the little hole.
Should work fine. Now you just need to get those weird lithium batteries it uses!
Good luck.

push down the small button directly above the battery door with a pen or something slender, while pushing the battery door downward, away from the thermometer. the 6012 model uses two CR2032 button cells.
