The 1/3hp motor 2 speed - 1/3 & 1/4 hp I had overheated 2 weeks after adding the central air to my furnace, probably due to the combination of the restrictions of the evaporator core and the small ductwork. A 3 speed 1/2, 1/3 & 1/4 hp motor was less expensive than replacing in kind. To reduce the chance of burning up the new one, should I wire it for high 1/2 hp or medium 1/3 hp for cooling? Which will be less stress on the motor?
Your thought process is a little backwards. Have you tested the static pressure? If the ducts are too restrictive you DEFINITELY don't need a bigger motor. Obviously the slowest setting is best.

You have a major voltage drop problem my friend! Can you get at least a 10 gauge cord in there. That would help the motor alot. It is straining to due what it is suppose to do. Let me know if that helps.

you have the motor connected on more than one speed in heat mode. make sure inly one mode is connected

Yes usually the black is high speed, the blue is low and red medium speed. plug the black wire from the fan motor to where the blue wire is, then put the blue where the black wire was

Never just replace any item because someone suggested it may have failed. Before replacing anything, you need to check each item for any signs it's bad. In addition to what I mentioned, the blower motor itself can also cause a problem if it is worn out and is drawing too much amperage to operate. If the blower makes any noise or the wiring becomes warmer than it should be after replacing any damaged parts, look at the motor. Bad motor ground can cause problems as well so check that too.

Try unplugging the unit and waiting a few which many times resets the board.
