You will need to buy a signal amplifier antenna. One that doe not have to be connected to the radio. It will provide the amplified signal and the radio antenna (the a/c line cord and the back of the clock/radio) will be able to pick up the signal from the amplified antenna.[http://www.radiolabs.com/products/antennas/am-antenna.php] this web link will show you one type of these antenna's. Copy the web link and paste it into the address bar in your browser. It will take you to the website. There maybe other types of these antenna's but this one had the best price. Call the store and talk to them before you buy the antenna to make sure it will work in your situation. I hope this information helps you with your antenna problems.
SOURCE: Radio in jeep cherokee will pick up few stations
Common problem... first, the antenna isn't connected directly to the radio... sometimes the junction points will crack and separate... second, sometimes the radios, radio tuner will go bad. if you have a Cherokee (not a Grand Cherokee) check you passenger side kick panel (location of a common antenna connection weak point) . Some genius placed a spring in the connection... just pull the spring out, reconnect and tape the connection together... Let me know if this helped at all... if the connections are all good, you will have to replace the radio... but, from what you described you wont have to...
SOURCE: FM reception for Sony ICF-CD513?
The electrical cord acts as an antennae for this radio. Uncoiling the cord will give the best reception for FM. Rotating the radio (and built in ferrite bar antennae) will give the best reception for AM listening.
