My problem is similar. I had to move my (working) scanner to a new location, and i almost dropped it. It wasn't on at the time. Didn't hit the floor, didn't get bumped, but wound up sideways and it got shook a little. On startup, it makes a dreadful loud clunking sound for 8 times, then goes to "flashing red light" mode. Powercycling, rebooting just gets more of the same. On-Line manual is no help either.
You may have accidently pushed the LOCK button - this button is used to LOCK the carriage into place when moving the scanner to another location or shipping it.
Check for a button and the picture of a LOCK, it is usually at the back of the scanner, you can push it left or right, and you have an open lock and a closed lock picture under it. Make sure you didn't accidently push it to the LOCK position when holding the scanner - that loud sound means your carriage is locked and cannot move - once you set the button to UNLOCK this should solve your problem.
My scanner had the same problem. I disconnected the USB from the scanner, waited for about 15 seconds then plugged the USB back in. That solved the problem. Previously, I turned the scanner's power OFF, then back ON, but the clunking sound and blinking red light still persisted. I even rebooted the computer, but the problem remained. The problem was onlt solved when I unplugged the USB, then plugged it back in.
