Question about Mercury Boating

2009 Mercury bigfoot 60 outboard will not go into gear? What could be the problem? Runs fine otherwise.

Good Morning Anna,
Start At The Control Box,
Safety
1.Disconnect The Battery
2.Remove The Kill-Switch Lanyard
3.Remove Engine Cowl
Whilst Someone is turning the propeller operate the control lever into forward gear.
Check- Does The Control Cable Move a Lever At The Motor Side
Yes/No
Move The Control Lever Into Neutral Does The Lever Move at The Motor Side Yes /No
If Your Answer Is No Then The Problem Lies With The Control Box And Cables.
If Yes Then The Problem Lies Between The Lever You See Moving In The Engine And The Internal Gear Selectors Inside The Gear Housing.
If You Are able To Open The Gearbox And You Require Further Assistance I Can Guide You Further.

Is the gas getting to the spark plugs? Is the kill switch clip in on your controls? If yes to all that try disconnecting the power for your kill switch so it's disabled. ( open the control shift box ) locate the two wires coming off the kill switch , follow them out until you find the bullet connectors ( quick connections ) pull the wire apart. And see if it starts. If it does you have a bad kill switch.

I am re-wiring my electric start on my 15 hp mercury mariner Bigfoot outboard motor. There was a problem in the 8 pin plug - inline between motor and key.

How to drain carb bowls on 1999 mercury 2strock 3cyl 60hp outboard

Hey Geoff,,, there is a "bolt" on the side of the float bowl,, unscrew and remove it,, gas should flow out, freely.,,while the "bolt" is out.. pump the bulb and this will help flush out some crud..BUT - For a complete cleaning,.. you need a qualified professional... its #25 on the diagram Parts for Mercury Marine 60 HP Bigfoot 3 Cylinder Carburetor

Mercury 60 Big Foot outboard

you can adjust the throttle position better than what you have described
the first forward action is the gear engagement and the at least 1/2 " lever movement before the engine starts to rev up
the same for reverse
that gives more control over the required rpms

Try fresh fuel...if carberated then clean out carbs. Sounds like clogged jets from varnished carb bowl and old fuel.
