A/C unit in attic has 2 thermostats that control it. This year, it has trouble maintaining 74-77 which I put it on. It gradually creeps back up to 78! Both thermostats do this.

The creeping back up to 78 for both therms can vary in the amount of time it takes to return to 78. So we are getting some cooling, but have to keep resetting it back down to 74. Sound like the A/C unit? or some sort of control box which both thermostats connect into - in order to direct the A/C unit?? What would the control box betw the two therms be called? How would I find it? The A/C company, who came out, says one valve?, in some sort of series of valves? is not shutting properly & so I need to buy an entirely new A/C unit. Does this sound right?? Id appreciate ANY advice, as I can not buy a new one! Thank you!

When you say creeping back to 78 are you meaning the set point temperature or the actual room temp creeps up???

Both of the actual thermostats creep back up to 78 ... as well as the actual temp in the room.

Someone suggested that the power may have gone out at some point and that they both may be reprogramming to factory defaults since then?? Im wondering if I could do a reset somehow?? IF thats the issue??

    btw.
    both are White-Rodgers 1F82-261

    TY sooooo much.

The board you are referring to would be the zone panel. This is not the problem. Obviously if the set point temp goes up to 78 then the room temp is going to go up to 78. Sounds like you are running a program. Every time you change the temp it is a temporary change depending on the length of the hold. You need to press the run/ hold button and be sure hold is displayed on the tstats. Run would mean you are running the program, hold means you always are controlling the temp by the temp the you set

  • Heather Duggan Jul 08, 2017

Would the power going out have started a program issue, do you think??
Ive got to then understand how to reset or reprogram, then. ?

It's very possible. You likely have a common wire which means the tstats do not require a battery. With out the battery if you lost power your program would have been interrupted. Or if batteries were dead. You don't need to have a program unless that's what you want. The manual is available online so you can reprogram it but first run the hold and be sure this is the problem.

Going to install batteries this afternoon ... but Ive never programmed it myself. Starting to wonder if it went back to factory default, or what?!

Ok, sounds good. But as I said press that hold button. Hold should be displayed on the screen. Turn it to 74 and see if it gets there and stays there. Best Wishes!!

Thanks so much!!! Saved me buying a new a/c unit! I feel kinda silly that I didnt know that I HAD to program it. Question: Why didn't the a/c tech check me on the programming issue?! ??

Well, I don't think I need to say, find a new air conditioning company. Unfortunately people are at the mercy of a.c. company's because if they knew how to fix them they wouldn't call us. Some company's take advantage of that and will sell, sell ,sell. I hope it's working fine and as I said it doesn't have to be programmed, that's an option. Glad I could help

2002 4 ton Bryant air conditioner shuts off, fan still runs but not cooling is problem in the controls in the attic or in the AC unit or both?

With a non heat pump it is a simple 24 volt AC control circuit. In the attic there is a relay that is actuated via the fan control wire directly from the thermostat. On the thermostat there is an auto/man switch that controls the fan. Manual the fan runs all the time. Auto fan turns on and off with the outside compressor.

If the system is not calling for cool and the fan continues to run the fan relay is sticking. common problem. Sometimes after running for several days the relay will stop sticking if not, replace relay.

If the system is calling for cool and the compressor stops I would still expect the fan to run until thermostat tells the A/C to off. Some compressor units include a safety switch or high-pressure cut-out switch A blocked internal valve bad control board or external fan in outside unit defective no air flow in outside unit.
High pressure cut out not good,

Suggest turning temp max cool and observe. If acceptable cool and the compressor runs without interruption all is good, except for the blower in the attic. Safely check relay in attic blower circuit.

Hope this helps.

I have an Amana new AC for 2 years. The problem I have is that the outside fan unit is running but the inside unit in the attic does not run. what could be the problem?

All Amana and most other brands have a five year parts warranty, without the model number I would have to say either the thermostat, control wiring which sends a signal to the G terminal may not be working or the blower motor is bad or jammed up.

My newly installed Broan-NuTone attic fan worked fine for two days. Now it wont turn off, even though the temperature has dropped well (40 degrees)below the setting(100 degrees).

Hi. The most likly cause of this type problem is the thermostat. Check the thermostat housing is it hot to the touch, is it close to a heat soarse, suchas, a motor or flu pipe for a water heater. If the thermostat has a adjustable heat range setting try setting it to the lowest setting if this shuts the unit off the calibration of the unit may not be set right. If the unit is new this should be covered under warranty.

My central heating unit is in the attic of my 2bd/2bth house. I don't know its age. It's a gas unit, but doesn't have a constant pilot flame. Rather, the pilot is ignited electronically. The problem is...

You don't mention make or model so here is my guess as to how to thinkout the trouble of what ever is in your attic.

For some reason, your heater is mis-firing. Normally, I would expect 3 to 5 such events at which time the heater goes out on safety. The heater knows it is on safety but you don't until it gets cold in your house. When you turn the power off, wait the 30 seconds, turn it back on, the heater no longer knows it is on safety (memory cleared) so it fires. Your heater continues to fire until ? at which time it starts counting again to 3 or some number. At the max mis-fire number - it goes out on safety again ... repeat - turn it off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on - no memory and so forth.

Do you have a service contract or regular service man? Might be time to find one.

Blower in attic & AC unit outside continuously run

Sorry to hear about your miss-fortune, you are right it is an wiring problem. Can you turn off the blower with the thermostat (cool-off-heat) or what happens when you switch the fan to (auto or on) When you say the outside unit is "rigged" is it mechanically being jammed or electrically? If its mechanically that should be removed (what a crappy thing to do) other wise it will run continuously as you may already know. That is what it sounds like, you should just be able to shut the entire system down by turning off the switch to the furnace. If it is electrically being held closed, he changed some of the wiring around in the attic unit, you better hope he was lazy and jammed a stick in the contactor in the outside unit or else you may need to learn more about HVAC wiring, none the less I would double check the thermostat wires going to the attic furnace there should be nomenclature on the unit or at least somewhat marked. This was probably disturbed when the new blower was installed, by the way that was your initial problem. Good luck and becarful

The outside unit is not working on my Heil Air conditioner

The attic fan is not a part of your a/c system, and you should not run it while you are running the a/c. If you are currently using the attic fan, it is possible that someone wired it so that the a/c won't turn on while the attic fan is on. Otherwise if the thermostat is set below room temp, and says it is calling for cool, then the problem is most likely coming from an issue at the outside unit itself. Make sure to check your fuses, at the fuse panel and outside breaker. Hope this helps

FYI.. the only part of the system that might use batteries is the thermostat.

Carrier (outside) Coleman Evcon (inside) Air Conditioning question

transformer has just 4 leads. 2 for primary which is your 110 volts and 2 for secondary which is supposed to be 24 volts ac. if you splice the two secondary wires coming out of your transformer, you should be able to get a 24 v ac there.

the box that you are referring to could be a fire controller that in case of fire, it would shut off the fan and the compressor outside.

tnx 4 using fixya,
