Our Sharp Microwave makes a strange noise like it wont power up. It's a louder than normal buzz and nothing cooks. It sounds like it does if you put it on "defrost" but the "buzz" is a little more pronounced.

We would need to know the full model number from the tag in the cooking cavity or elsewhere on the microwave, such as the door frame, controller frame, etc.
Please post a new help request with that and more detailed symptoms, such as when it occurs.
When you hit "Start" to
microwave, do the inside light, cooling fan, and turntable all
come on?
Any unusual noises? Is
it louder or quieter than usual?
We have a sound clip of
what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high
voltage section are operating here.
Unit uses a Magnetron and likely a power board called an inverter to run it. Someone would have to open the unit in a way where they might pinpoint where the sound is coming from and then take action--does not of course sound normal or good to me.
If the loud buzzing noise is present when cooking food, the magnetron is the likely cause, some models are louder than others. But if the buzzing noise is there without the microwave running it should be checked. No! this something that should be checked by a professional for safety.
buzzinsg / humming / loud or louder than normal .is probably the mag / it has failed and the trans is making that noise . if older than 5 yrs I would replace ans the mag is 100.00 + and w / labor you have paid for a new on but have the old one .**** ..
So we can help you, please post a NEW question, and please
include your full model number from the tag in or on
the unit, as well as the answers to these questions:
When you try to microwave are the inside light, internal cooling fan and turntable all working?
Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?
A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a
shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an
empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can
be bad without that sound. We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.
We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
