Sounds like you haven't put some of the parts back properly , take off the cover again and make sure the drive shaft can turn freely and check the parts are seated in the correct place , ps make sure you use the correct grease for the moving parts and gears good luck colin

Sorry, what is the drive shaft? is it the long rod-like part next to the worm gear assembly? Also: the grease came w. the mixer so I assume it is the correct kind. Thanks!

A instruction manuel won't tell you to open the case where there's electrical pats exposed unless your a qualified electrician but you said the grease came with this, where does it go

The grease goes around the gears within the mixer. here is a photo of the top coverhttps://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwipgZjmxs3UAhWM5CYKHYZfCv4QjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fphotophiend%2F4253337610&psig=AFQjCNHnkstjecdaHeGUxJfhSuiqaapmkg&ust=1498086889482519

Makes a grinding noise at higher speeds

If it is leaking you are going to have to go inside the gearbox to change the grease so whatever is wrong inside may become obvious when you take it apart. Remove accessory cap from the front and look for any dryish grindings inside there.

Low speed noise

Check that the nuts under the back cover at the sides have a bit of nip on them. It could be the armature polling on the fields. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THOSE NUTS.

325 k5ss mixer stir speed not working, but works in all other gears

First congrats on the great mixer that you have. next the pro 6 or professional 600 series mixers are of an entirely different design than the one that you have even though they are both bowl lift. Do you really need 6 quarts capacity? The pro series is a 575 watt mixer BTW, and it will have more power available to you IF you are doing bread or a lot of food grinding, if that is a requirement that you have then the 6 / 600 series is the better suited mixer but if all you are doing is general medium to light mixing duties then fix and keep the K5SS it a great machine,

Have a KS55 mixer that has never been used -- sitting for about 4 years and went to turn it on and it makes a noticeable clicking sound in the lower speed settings (1-3). Noise goes away (or is not...

A lot of things can happen to a piece of machinery after 4 years of idling time.
Dust, moisture, rust and dry hard Grease are just few of the problems. The
good news is it's not hard to put it back into service again. Obtain a copy
of the Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com and start opening up the mixer.
Vacuum all dust inside, remove dirt and debris. Open up the Transmission
Housing and scoop out of the old grease. Use fresh Kitchenaid Food Grade
Grease for all gears including the Agitator (part of the Planetary Assembly) and
you are good to go.

Motor speed is erratic. Now it makes grinding noises

There is a speed governor on the motor end of the armature (back end of the motor) that may
need replacing. It's one of the few parts still available. on eBay, or mendingshed.com

The grinding could either be the gears in the beater end of the mixer, or the motor bearing on
the back end of the motor.

The gears are available as they are the same as for newer mixers like the K5SS.

The motor end bearing is not available, but I was able to take the bearing out of the motor
bearing plate from a K5SS which is still available, again on eBay or mending shed, and put
it in the motor bearing plate for the K5A. Then you need to soak the felt ring inside the housing
on the back end of the bearing in oil, preferably synthetic like Mobil 1. Also helps to smear
a little moly grease (not out of a tube, not enuf moly content - get some Honda Moly 60, small
tube for $10 at any Honda store) on the shaft when you have it apart.

My Kitchenaid mixer (k5ss lift bowl?) smells hot

I think you have a K45SS. It sounds like there is a problem with one of the gears, probably the worm gear. The worm gear is designed to be the first to fail if the mixer has struggled with a heavy dough or other difficult to mix substance. The best way to establish the cause will be to open the head up and check the gears for signs of damage.

Kitchenaid mixer leaking oil

Some of the oil has separated from the grease inside the transmission, the grease should be replaced. You don't need a total dismantle,. simply remove the top cover and the transmission housing. Remove as much old grease as you can, then replace it with grease from Kitchenaid Parts, or locate a Shell Oil distributor in your area, you want Shell Darina XL EP-2. The oil that came out of your unit probably won't be enough to do immediate damage, but because it's separating, it's becoming less effective. It'a messy job to remove it but will add years of life to your mixer. If you find this solution helpful, please rate it. Good luck. ricardok45
