SOURCE: gas heater doesn't stay on longer than 5 minutes.

It sounds to me that your air flow is restricted somewhere. The first thing to check is your air filter. If that gets real dirty your restricted air flow will cause the hi-limit(hi temperature limit switch) in your heat exchanger compartment to over heat and open up your gas valve electrical circuit, thus, shutting off the gas to your burners. After the hi-limit switch cools down the furnace will go back to heating again then it will overheat again(you get the picture?) If it keeps cycling on and off like that the house will never get warm if it is cold outside. If your air filter is reasonably clean(you should be able to see light thru it easily) then the secondary heat exchanger could also be dirty, this is located above the indoor fan housing, you would need to pull the indoor blower assembly out of the furnace and look up above. The secondary heat exchanger looks similar to a radiator will fins. You can use a medium stiff plastic brush to brush the dirt, hair, whatever off of it. Another problem spot would be the cooling evaporator coil (if you have central airconditioning) located most likely above the furnace in the plenum(if your furnace is in a basement). This usually is difficult to access if an access cover wasn't installed when the airconditioning was installed. I would recommend an experience service tech to clean it for you. Also make sure all you supply air registers and return air registers are open . These are the things I would check first. Good luck!!

SOURCE: pilot on, gas fires up, no fan comes on.

Sounds like you are talking about the indoor fan that circulates air through house. Turn the unit off and make sure the fan rotates freely. Next check the capacitor for the fan. If it looks swollen its probably bad. If it doesn't look swollen then you will need a multimeter to check it with. If that's ok then check the fan relay. Let me know what you find.

I cannot get the water in the water heater to drain out

Are we talking about the big water heater for the whole house?-- the a 30 ro 40 gallon water heater-- one that stands several feet tall?

What heats it?-- Electric or Gas-- or what?

You have shut off the water supply to it?--

If electric:
AND THE ELECTRIC TO IT!!-- so you don't burn out the heater elements?

Can you find any drain plug near the bottom?
Some heaters have a valve at the bottom-- does yours?

Some Electric Water heaters make you remove the heating element to drain it--
You can remove the electric wires, and slip a big deep socket over the hex shoulders on the threaded type--- Or remove the bolts on the flanged type--
Which is yours?
And it helps to open a hot water faucet somewhere-- to let air into the tank, so water can run out the bottom.

If you are talking about an instantaneous water heater, it will mean opening some union fittings on the supply and return fitting of the heater-

Water heater will not heat water

There are a lot of causes.
First step at fixya, you say what type of water heater you have.
Gas tank , Electric tank, Tankless.

If you do not know, then look at unit.
Gas tank is about 2 feet in diameter and stands 4 to 5 feet tall. It has 2 water pipes on top, a 4" diameter galvanized pipe sticking out of top
Electric tank is same size, it has 2 water pipes on top, and a wire sticking out of top.
Tankless is a box that is attached to wall.

Look for label on side of water heater.
Write down all the information shown on label, and add a comment with that information.'
And then say what symptoms you noticed prior to water heater failure.

Add a comment for more free help.

Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, fixya expert speaks with you over phone while you work on water heater.
We are less expensive than a service call, and we have satisfaction guarantee.

Gas hot water heater will not automatically heat water, i have to manually start the burner to heat the water

Sounds like you have a bad thermostat. You can change the thermostat, but if the heater is more than 8 or 10 years old you might be better off to replace the entire heater. Thermostat replacement is easy:
1 turn off the gas 2 drain the heater 3 unscrew pilot, main burner, and thermocouple lines from bottom of thermostat. 4 unhook gas line from thermostat. 5 unscrew thermostat from heater tank. Use pipe sealer when you install new thermostat, and gas line fittings. burner and thermocouple lines seal on a taper seat and do not need sealer. after reassembly check for leaks with soapy water, not a match, light the pilot and turn up the temp. The heater may sweat quite a bit while it is heating up the first time, this is due to the cold water on the inside and the fire on the outside. some water may drip in the bottom of the heater and you might think you have a leak, but let it heat up completly, if the water is still dripping after the tank is hot then you need to find the leak.

Oven not heating

On the bottom is a link of what your oven is. I'm pretty sure it's the ingnightor #16. You should see a glow red hot when you turn on the oven or broil. Very common problem and pretty reasonable price to repair. Unless that glows and get's red hot, it will not turn on the gas. I think that should do it. Let me know if you need anything else. Vulcan oil heater

1. Check electricity is on.
2. Check oil is in the tank and valve turned on.
3. Switch the fan off at the bottom left hand corner.
4. Switch oil knob to No.1.
5. Set Air knob to No.3.
6. Operate re set button (right hand corner of heater under settings dial). Either press in until it clicks or if the pull out version pull out until it clicks.

Wait - ignition should take place in a few minutes and flames will appear on the left of the burner under the radiants.

You should get occasional yellow crests above the pure blue flame just visible below the top row of burner holes under the radiants.

After the red warning light goes out you can adjust to higher settings.

The radiants do not glow on low setting.

You can adjust the heater on to higher settings but this should be done gradually - no more than 2 settings at a time.

Some warnings:

* The unit must be correctly earthed.
* Do not use anything except heater oil.
* Never attempt to re-light the heater when it is hot.
* If the red light does not appear when the oil knob is switched on, immediately turn the oil knob off. Reasons include: Heater is too hot; Electric plug turned off; failure of ignition system.

Good luck - no responsibility taken for the advice (but it is largely copied from my Vulcan heaters instruction manual which I still have (installed in 1967).
