Question about Dell W4201C 42 in. Plasma HDTV

1 Answer

W4201C no picture only sound

I recently discovered my 2 yr old TV a Dell W4201C turns on. I get the DELL logo for a split second but looks to be very pixelilized . The logo then fades after 2 seconds and a black screen is all there is but with sound from the cable box. I tried shining a flashlight into the TV and do not see an image. Any other suggestions???

The TV turns on fine but i'm unable to see any picture. Even selecting input on the remote i cannot see the input menu but i can guess and switch it over to the DVD player input. From there i can hear the sound from the DVD but no picture.

I took the back off the TV and noticed that the TV contains all samsung parts. Some of the board had LED's that were lite up for voltages. One though on the logic board was flashing and not sure if thats good or bad as the LED was not labeled for what it was outputing like the other voltage ones were.

I don't believe its my backlight as even when i contacted dell out of warranty they said same thing since i can see the DELL logo briefly then it fades right away. One suggested it was the power supply to the backlight as he said it usually is seperate but it looks like the power all went to 1 large board that had the transformers on it.

    One question, for the tip:

The Dell logo gradually appeared with time, the fault was due to C2621 (22uF,250v) capacitor

Which board do i find this capacitor on? I feel comfortable enough removing the old and soldering a new one in but i i don't know which board this capacitor is on. If i knew i could then look closer at the capacitor to see if its definitely bad or not.

I was able to find C2621 (22uF,250v) capacitor but it looks fine to me. Its not one of the tube capacitors i'm usually familiar with but instead a small rectangular one. I'm going to contact an electronics place tomorrow, what if that capacitor isn't bad, i'm guessing any experienced electronics place should be able to diagnose my problem and find out which capacitor is bad. Not sure how you came up with those answers, but i'm guessing a number of capacitors could go bad and would cause this problem. correct?

Any other suggestions for capacitor to look at? I won't be touching as i'm not 100% how to discharge one safely.

Just an update. For anyone who comes across this thread and has a Dell out of warranty TV, good luck is all i have to say.

So i contacted a certified Samsung TV Repair man here in town. He came to my house and checked the voltage on the Va. The reading should had been 70 V but was dropping to 25.4 V. He confirmed that my main power supply board was in deed bad. The board had Samsung brand on the board so he contacted Samsung tech support and as soon as he said Dell they said they cannot help as Dell labels the parts with there own Part Number and do not refer back to actual Samsung part numbers and only Dell knows those. So i was told to contact Dell. After 3 hours being transfered around and around and talking to manager after manager and being offered 6% of 2500 of the TV that i turned down, i finally was transfered to the electronics department who flat out told me that the a home user CANNOT purchase parts, only an authorized dell warranty service department such as Decision One or this Maples, or Naples, or something. At this point i'm thinking this is BS. So i was transfered to them but they were closed so i left a message. If anyone would like these numbers see below:

Decision One (only projection TV or projectors): 800-941-4478
Maples, naples, no idea name (TV support): 502-240-1005

So now i'm waiting to hear back from this company. I just need to find someone to purchase the board then i pay them. Unless someone has any recommendations for why this Va voltage is dropping and which part i need to replace or can recommend me a really good electronics place that i can contact and have them find and fix the part on the board since now i know where the problem lies.

    Any help would be great!

Try to use dvd player to play video to determine where the problems goes wrong either from the video signal of the cable provider or from the TV itself.

Please let me know any update.

If your are familiar working on electronics parts that's the best for you to do it if not ask some friend know how to troubleshoot TV parts.

Here are some tips you need to know:
    No picture, sound ok

The Dell logo gradually appeared with time, the fault was due to C2621 (22uF,250v) capacitor.
No picture, sound ok, E.H.T and heaters ok (may be only when cold)

This was due to the CNX62A optocoupler causing excessive ripple on L.T and H.T lines

The best advice is to bring your TV to the repair shop to replace the capacitor problem.

    Good Luck

Once the capacitor damage the top cover will become something like explode or you can identify the difference from the other capacitor don't let your self to replace it if you afraid just let the technician to do it for better result.

Sometimes capacitor not look bad but you need to use circuit tester to determine the negative and positive still working. Sometimes need to soldered the capacitor probably lost of contact some parts of the circuit diagram which unable to display your TV. If you are pretty sure that you still hear a sound on your TV that would the problem of your TV which is the capacitor has been damage.

Probably these would be the part of your experience and you can use it in the near future to help others. Please observed the technician whatever the findings it will take but I'm sure your TV has only a few problems not so bad. Thanks for the rate. God Bless

I have a dell w4201c hd tv first got it used only the DELL logo comes on very clear purchased a main board and the tv came on worked perfect after 2 to 3 weeks turned on and picture comes in dim every...

Change input device to some other like a DVD player and see. Check for loose contacts in power outlet, RC cable, jack and socket. Try resorting to factory default settings. If nothing works, you may have to look for any dry solders, leaky/dry capacitors on board.

Picture is fine for about an hour then goes fuzzy

Hello Townsend, It sounds like a problem called blooming, or you are having a problem with focus control which are signs of a problem in the horizontal and high voltage section of the tv in the case of plasma TV this would be the excitation circuit. I would suggest that you take the set to a TV repair shop to effect repairs.

the problem was the y-sus board, i had a local tv repair shop diagnos that much for me. although, he couldn't fix it i did some research and found a company in california,, who could. you send him the y-sus board and the two buffer boards and he not only repairs them but he upgrades them. apparently the y-sus board gets too much heat and eventually goes out, sometimes the buffer boards are affected too. replaces the components on the y-sus board with better parts which are more heat resistent. i believe this will help you with your problem. let me know...good luck.
