NO grease!!! Best option is to pick up sewing machine oil sold by Elna--make sure it is the oil recommended for your model. For a computerized machine, apply only as directed in the owner's manual. Computerized machines usually take a clear, thin oil whereas mechanical machines usually take a thicker, lemon-colored oil. To keep your machine purring, AVOID old or inexpensive sewing machine oil. If it is an older mechanical machine, a drop or two can be applied every place where metal rubs against metal--do NOT oil nylon gears, belts, etc.

Can the elna contessa 305 sewing machine be manually used?

Manually? As in, without electricity? Probably not very effectively or efficiently...A treadle machine is manual because it is powered by your feet pumping the treadle.

I am trying to do a straight stretch stitch with my elna jubile sewing machine... How can I do this? Where can I find an instruction manual for this machine?

This isn't possible. There needs to be slack in the thread in the direction of the stretch in order to achieve this and there is none to speak of in a straight stitch.

The best you can do is to use one of the zig-zag types, depending on what you need to sew.

For manuals, look here: http://sewingonline.co.uk/elna-manuals.html
and here: http://www.whitesewingcenter.com/manuals.php#elna
and here: Elna Sewing Machine Instruction and Service Manuals
and here: Elna Instruction Manuals

The last link may be your best bet (scroll down the list) and whitesewingcentre.com is very also good but you'll need to state the exact machine type - there are more than one Elna Jubilee models.

My "new" elna type 722010 only sews in reverse.

What is the stitch length lever set to (4 in the diagram below)? these models have a lever that slides from positive to negative (ie) reverse, so you need to set it to the positive area, between 2 and 3 above zero. If you move it below zero then it sews that stitch length backwards.

If this machine is new to you, you might want to join the yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" there is lots of helpful members who share info on these old machines there.

Problem with 40 old Elna Zigzag , V/NV/21, Type: 21cF347986

Um, sounds like the machine has seized from old, dry oil and it is dragging down the motor. Avoid using the machine until the issue is resolved so the motor is not damaged.

Depends what kind of oil & grease your husband used, as it could have complicated matters. Also, if the machine has been neglected for a long time, combining heat in the clean-up/lube process is sometimes very helpful. (Can't tell you the machines I've picked up that have had motor oil and grease applied!!! The old gunk needs to be cleaned out and then the appropriate lube applied.) Most machines do not use grease unless it is white lithium grease--perhaps on cams. Oil needs to be fresh, good quality sewing machine oil. I prefer liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube from the hardware store. Do NOT use WD-40, 3-in-1, cooking oil, motor oil, etc. on your machine!

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

Elna machanical sewing machine

50 year old elnas made stitches by cams. look to see if the machine has a cam in it. you can see this by opening lid on top of machine. cams are black with red or white showing the pattern of the cam. could also have broken cam stack gear. That would require technician with elna experience
