Have tried to upgrade memory from 256mb to 1gb on the n232 motherboard and it is showing memory as 30mb. Have also tried two 256mb but the screen remains blank. It will work with one 256mb of ram.

You don't want to upgrade the cpu. As for the video card it can't be changed as its build into the laptop motherboard.
I would highly recommend that you instead upgrade the ram memory on the laptop since it will give you a bigger performance increase than a new cpu or video card.
The machine only has 256MB of ram, get atleast 512MB or 1024 /1gb of ram and it will work much better.
You should check with the folks at Dell since whoever wrote their technical manuals for this machine can't do basic math. There are 2 memory slots and each can handle a maximum capacity of 512MB, yet they claim the maximum capacity for the machine is 2GB instead of 1GB. Using 512MB modules would probably work.
Let me see if I can help you out a bit... Adding a 160gb to a 40gb does give you 200gb. BUT!!! you will loose a little bit on each one after formatting the harddrive. The new drive will wind up being about 157 or 159gb give or take a little. ANY harddrive partition, whether it is a c:, d:, etc...you DO have to format EACH drive letter. If you partition your 160gb harddrive into 2 parts, (2) 80gb drives, then they would get two drive letters and both of them get formatted. IF the 40gb drive is C: then the new 160gb partitioned in half would be D: & E:. CDROM Drive would be F: and so on.... Floppy Drives, CDrom Drives, DVD Drives, you do not have to format like a hard drive...
If you add a 1gb stick of memory to your existing 256mb stick of memory then you WOULD have 1gb + 256mb. If you remove the 256mb and just add 1gb, then you would just have 1gb.
Its a memory problem obviously. Try dusting the memory slot and try inserting the memory into the slot a couple of times. If still not working, the memory may be incompatible(rarely, there are brands of boards that doesn't suit to certain brands of memory), or it may be damaged.
hi there, i dont see why u should not upgrade to 1gig RAM ... but u should stick to one memory speed ...and Size but if u can try to get the PC2700 - DDR400Mhz memory
yeah!! you can do an upgrade as long you know the specifications of your system unit. its ok..it seems that your'e good to go improve the performance ( just don't exceed it to 1GB ot it will crash your motherboard)
