I managed to fix this problem by:

1. clear my browser history (cache)
2. Go to google main page http://www.google.com and click the "sign out" link at the upper right corner - just near your google id..

once signed out. try to login again. I am using firefox 3.5.6 by the way :)

When I open google, my gmail account shows in the upper right hand corner and by clicking on it , it brings me to my gmail account. Why do I not need a password ?

I believe you're already logged into your Google Account in Google Chrome which keeps your logged-in status. Google will use your login credentials for Google Chrome to allow you to access your Gmail without requiring you to login again. To force a login each time, you may wish to logout of your Google Account from Google Chrome.

Google gmail account login

Maybe what is confusing is that even with cookies reset, Google Chrome remembers your username. If you want to log in as a different user, they make you specifically do that, you have to 'add account.' This doesn't mean anything, it just means you are going to use a different user name than the one displayed, don't be afraid to 'add account' and 'remove account.' These actions by the way I think do set and unset cookies.

Gmail account login

It's possible than one time it was entered with a typo and Gmail remembered that. Don't worry, go to this address from within Google Chrome:
chrome://settings/passwords

and see if the .con address is saved there. If yes, delete it and type the correct address when you login next time. It should not show up anymore.

If you can't find it there, you need to clear the saved cache. Let me know if this is the case and we will find a solution.
