Get a Chilton repair manual they have a section on how to set timing. But you may be in trouble if it has a interference engine. A interference engine is where the piston and valve hit together.

Timing went out .how to fix it

if u think it jumped timing u will have to replace the timing chain. to do this locate timing chain cover and remove it. then find #1 cylinder and remove spark plug. turn engine till the piston is all the way to top of cylinder. u can tell this by placing a screwdriver in hole and turn engine by moving engine a little at a time till u feel piston come to top. unplug spark plugs so engine does not start. remove the timing chain and gears put chain on making sure that timing marks on gears line up perfect. if u are off just one tooth it will not run right. put back together. if u don't have one go to auto parts store and get repair book for your explorer. it gives u step by step inst. on the project

On 2002 ford explorer,4.6-v-8, when i was changing timing chain guides and adjusters the chains jumped teeth on the crankshaft. The manual says the left camshaft timing mark should be approx. @ 11:oo & the...

Look for some Youtube videos on this repair. If I remember correctly the links on this chain have different color metal for the spots that the cam tooth goes against. When each side is in the proper tooth the right and left colored links will be on the cam mark and the crank mark should be on the timing TDC mark. Sounds like the slack you describe is wrong and a tooth is off because the tensioner is allowing slack.. You need to slip a tooth one way or the other until the tensioner has room to be in a neutral position.

What I know, is there is no reason a professional
mechanic with any experience can not figure it out

Try a different shop with more skilled personnel

You have rpm jumping,backfires

Was anything at all checked or tested, really

What about the timing belt or chain
What about cylinder contribution
What about cylinder leak down

All basic mechanical old school stuff,
then move on to the electrical

Trying a crank sensor is fine, if you have
an oscilloscope on 3 parameters at one time
for comparison & find an actual problem

You have a back fire, only so many reasons
for that

Valves,timing,fuel, ignition & a few more

1996 gmc c 1500 won't start back fired & died & red light us on on my hyper teck power tuner

Sounds like your timing chain has jumped out of time, if the timing chain is old, the chain jump a few teeth putting it out of time having it fire at the wrong time when the exhaust valve is open. Check timing by pulling #1 plug - bring #1 piston to the top and line up timing mark , Ifind it easy to put thumb over spark plug hole and have someone bump the engine over and feel the pressure relief stop before you feel vacumm - timing mark should line up if the timing hasn't jumped

Issue with timing chain

HE needs to stop trying to start the engine if it keeps jumping time. Replace the tensioner or make sure the older one is installed correctly by the book. If he keeps trying to start the engine and jumping time and the cam shaft has a valve open in the head a piston can com up and hit the valve and then the valve will be bent. And you will be screwed and a head rebuild will be in your future. I have been a Certified Mechanic for over 25 years and if this guy is truly certified he should not be having this problem. Make sure he is and has the shop manual for your car. If not purchase a chiltons manual for your car specifically. May cost you $20.00 it will have the info he needs and throw it at him. A lot of times it is best to replace the tensioner when doing a timing chain repair. You already have the engine timing cover and other parts off the front of the engine. If there is any play in the bearings of the tensioner replace it.

your intrepid doesnt have a timing belt it has a chain. there are major problems with these engines, theres a big one with the chain jumping due to a tensioner breaking or a guide, heres a diagram for the chain setup.this is a very important setup make sure you use correct sprokets in the right place and also if it jumped timing il bet you may have some bent valves,1441a70.gif
