Mark, It can be tricky, use small ***** driver to push back brushes one at a time while working armature in place or if you can get a buddy to hold them both back while you slide armature in place.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Getting NO power from the MR2 160/2 Mecc Alte Spa altenator stator. Generator repairman said he didn't find anything wrong using his voltmeter. Measured 6 vac out. I tested caps and they seem good....

There are a few more components to check in the system. From the information provided this is not a Kohler generator as Kohler makes all their own AC alternators under 350KW, seems you may have just a Kohler engine (probably a CH25). Cannot find any info on the voltage regulator which leads me to believe it may be integrated into the main controller. Curious to know who the manufacturer is. If the capacitors are good, try checking the diodes. A volt/ohm meter with a diode check will do. Voltage reading on one side and nothing on the other. If you have no access to a diode check feature, try reading it through a battery NOT SHORTED TO BATTERY hook a meter to a battery and put the diode between one of the leads to the positive, one way will read voltage the other will read open, no voltage, or OL. Look for any fuses or breakers blown / tripped. 6 VAC on the output is about residual voltage meaning voltage the alternator makes without any help from a voltage regulator or field voltage. This usually means the alternator / rotor windings are still good. This alternator is brushless so you could seperately excite this unit via a 12V battery through your field. Look for your exciter field winding, it should have some kind of label on it saying F+ and F-, apply 12V here momentarily on + & - respectively with the unit running and you should see your output voltage spike. This tests the alternator. If this tests ok, then check to make sure your wiring / fuses from the alternator to the controller or voltage regulator (voltage sensing leads) are ok. If all these check ok, it is likely you have a bad voltage regulator.

Kohler ch730s runs but battery dies while engine is running.voltage regulator?

you may be verify that the stator is working, you can disconnect the two either white, gray,or yellow leads that go into the regulator/rectifier.these come off the stator. You will need to use a multimeter set to "ac" to check this. Set the meter to read at least 100v ac. them ,while engine is running, check the voltage on these leads...should be around 30VAC..If this voltage is present then you can rule out the stator.

Put new battery on engine thinking that was problem. Engine drew down battery till it won't start engine.

most common problem is the regulator/rectifier going bad. it has a built in diode that changes ac volts to dc & then sends it to the battery.

MTD yard Machine lawnmower,17hp Briggs And Stratton engine. Runs for about 15 or 20 minutes and stalls. It will not start again until I recharge the battery over night. Then only runs again for 15 or 20...

yes it could be

check your battery 1st , then check the stator a/c output

• 10 or 16 Amps DC regulated for charging
• Two black leads (C) from stator
• Yellow connector (D) with two pin
• Two yellow leads (E) to regulator-rectifier
• One red lead (B) from regulator-rectifier
to red connector output lead (A)
• 10 and 16 Amp systems use the same
stator, color coding and regulator-rectifier
• Alternator output is determined by the
flywheel alternator magnet size

The stator and regulator-rectifier are the same
for the 10 and 16 Amp systems. The system
output is determined by the flywheel magnet
Test Alternator Output
1. Temporarily disconnect stator wire
harness from the regulator-rectifier.
2. Insert RED test lead (A, Figure 28) into the
V ω receptacle in the meter.
3. Insert BLACK test lead (B) into COM
4. Rotate selector to AC Volts position.
5. Insert RED (A) and BLACK (B) test lead
probes into output terminals (D & E) in
YELLOW connector (C). (Test clip leads
may be attached to either terminal).
6. With the engine running at 3600 rpm, the
output should be no less than:
• 20 volts - 10 Amp System
• 30 volts - 16 Amp System
7. If No or Low output is found, check for
bare wires or other defects. If wiring
defects are not found, replace the stator.
voltage depending on alternator type and magnet size

then check the regulator / rectifier , make sure it is grounded properly

make sure battery earth lead is good

i suspect loss of bat voltage is letting the afterfire solenoid close off the main jet

let me know model and type codes off engine & i will try help further

Contact your local vendor.

The highest probability is replace the voltage regulator.

Have you added or modified anything electrical?

these regulators don't handle very much in the way of regulation and are really only designed to recharge the battery after starting.

Hope this tip helps.
