Go into your BIOS on the laptop when you first turn it on. Go in there and see if there is a setting for the touchpad. If there is then go ahead and make sure its enabled. If there isn't then you'll need to take apart the laptop and reseat the connector that goes from the touchpad to the motherboard.
If that doesn't do it then you'll need to get the touchpad replaced.
That's very odd. My 6930 touchpad was too sensitive so I went to Synaptics and downloaded the driver which includes a lot of settings and adjustments you can try.
you have to install all drivers fro your acer.
Go to acer support and download drivers.
Start with the chipset driver and than the others,
Restart after every install. http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html
try using an usb keyboard, if you can use the usb keyboard it's an hardware issue and you need to plug it to the motherboard yourself or just ask the manufacturer to do it for you.
If an usb keyboard doesn't work you have a software issue and in case it isn't a virus, all you have to do is a system restore.
Did it shut off on the keypad? Sometimes things are being so frustrating that we forget that the keypad has a shutoff that can get bumped. Make sure it's on.
