No
capacitors either work or they don't work
being electronic and subject to surges and spikes they can last many years or just months
there are various qualities of capacitors but even that is no guarantee of long life
you can check if the capacitor is correct by getting oll of the details off the plate on the motor( volts, current , rpms , hertz-phase , cycles etc and with that information take the failed capacitor to an electric motor repair shop and they will know if it was correct or not
the requirements are correct voltage and mica/peka farads required to start/run the motor
there is a permissible range but outside that range , the capacitor is wrong

My Pentair pump is just 2 years old and it was working good yesterday I turned off I turned it on in now it humms for a minute or 2 then it just turns off completely how do I fix this

motors that hum indicate 2 things
seized pump or failed start /run capacitor
as it was running recently I would be checking the capacitor
the stopping altogether may be the thermal overload switch cutting in because of the high current draw from the failed capacitor

Turned off breaker and pump will not come back on. Not start capacitor

might be a bad breaker, test power at motor you should have about 220v on the line 1 and 2 terminals if the motor is set to run on, there is a daigram on the side of the motor for refrance

Pump switching off for about 10 -20 seconds, then back on. Hapens about every hour

the little house on top of the motor has a capacitor in it 90% of the time thats whats wrong with this motor it's eather a 30 or a 35 mf .
pull this off the motor and search your area for pool pump motor repair, free testing ,use your zip code in the search, ask if they can test a capasitor for you.. wait to take capacitor off till the motor cools off
about a $20.00 fix
hey if'n i was of help vote..thanks ..jay

I HAVE A MAGNUM FORCE PUMP. iT WAS RUNNING THIS

It could be the capacitor again, but most likely if it stopped while running, its not that, unless you had a brief power failure. The motor may have a built in thermal overload which turned the pump off. If it only humms then it could either be locked up by something in the impller, or could be the bearings in the motor have failed. If the motor doesn't smell "burnt" then you might stand a change to disassemble the pump. Disassemble the motor and replace bearings. Replace the mechanical seal while you have it apart. OR you could buy a new motor, as it is 10 years old.

My challenger 3/4 pump has started to sound louder and louder.

Replace the motor bearings before they fail completely and ruin the motor.
